I'm looking to replace my camera but I don't have much money to spend and I don't have a clue of what is a good camera and what I should expect to spend on one so I'm open to suggestions. I want something that doesn't require a college degree to operate but takes sharp close-ups. I was thinking of looking around the local pawn shops for a deal but I wouldn't know a deal from a POS so I'm kinda thinking that I should probably get a new one online or at Wal Mart. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for that. That close-up of the speedo looks pretty sharp. There's a Big-Lots right down the road a couple miles from my house.

When I was looking for a new cam a while back, I did a lot of Google searches. There are photo sites out there that offer reviews based on price range. I found those very helpful. I got a Panasonic ZS3. It got excellent ratings on a lot of photo sites and tech sites, fit my price range (more than I wanted to spend, but worth squeezing for to me), and had the features I wanted. You see pics from it all the time here, and I shoot 720p video with it. I use a GoPro for onboard stuff, but the how-tos lately are shot with the ZS3. For close ups, you need a camera that does macro. They probably all do that now. If you want it for forums, megapixels aren't that important. I leave mine on a low 3MP setting and still downsize them to 640x480 or 800x600 for the forum. The cam does 10MP, and that's huge. There are cams that do a lot more, but if you aren't printing posters there's no point. Zoom. Always comes in handy. You wouldn't think so, but it really does. Optical zoom is great. Digital zoom, not so much. Video. You can get better video cameras, but some of these digicams do pretty well. Just gotta weigh out if the added cost of the video is worth sacrificing some other options to keep in the same price range. If it's not HD video, don't even bother. Storage. Get something capable of using an SD card or other storage that can hold many gigs if you plan to shoot any video or take high res photos in bunches. Batteries. Mine uses rechargeable packs and came with a charger. I really like it. You may prefer regular AA or whatever or rechargeable AA. We have some folks here much better with photos and cams than I, but there's a start. This is mine, prob well above what most would spend. Bear in mind, I have literally 1,000s of photos posted and wanted something I thought I could trust. www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&client=opera&hs=Pdk&rls=en&channel=suggest&q=panasonic+zs3&gs_upl=9572l10228l2l10430l3l1l2l0l0l0l127l127l0.1l3l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=923&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=4866437305853442467&sa=X&ei=L1yvTvnhM-ng0QGi3cSfAQ&ved=0CH4Q8wIwAQ

That one looks pretty good. I'll have to do some research like Brent suggested. I'll check out Amazon and Wal Mart too.

Brent covers it well.
The advantage of higher pixel chip is in the greater contrast it can handle.
I'm a big fan of Canons. Can be a bit more but tend to have a rugged construction and last a good long time.
I recommend finding a good brand and sticking with it. My Canon today works a lot like the old film one i used in the early 80s. I don't have to think or read the book because all the controls look the same.
If you are the type of person that takes good care of your equipment then i suggest getting the best you can afford and using it forever. Saves having to learn a new system every year.
BTW all of my "Hallett Racing" video was shot with a $400 Canon photo camera.
