I recently got a Kawasaki G5100 dirt bike for trade. It has good compression, good oil, but it needs a new fuel system and it needs spark. Right now I’m focusing on ignition because I have little to no idea what I am doing:) I have a couple of questions for you fellow dirt bike junkies: Will I still get spark if my timing is off? What are these different types of ignition coil parts? (Images are in google drive link) I stuck a screw driver in the spark plug socket, kicked it over, and felt a faint shock, but not a strong one. What does this mean? In images 2393 and 2394, what is the washer/wire thing for? Washer/wire is a ground,it should go on one of the coil bolts..If you put a spark plug into the plug wire and lay it in the cylinder head, you should see a nice blue spark when kicking it through..

Will I still get spark if my timing is off? Yes, usually. Maybe not in some unlikely extreme cases. I stuck a screw driver in the spark plug socket, kicked it over, and felt a faint shock, but not a strong one. What does this mean? It means that you're checking spark the wrong way. This is not how you want to find out that you've got a heart condition. Use a spark tester or put a spark plug in the cap and hold the metal (threaded area) against a ground like the engine or frame. Hold the wire or cap (something insulated) or, better yet, lay the plug down if you can so you don't even have to touch it. Then look at the spark when you crank it over. If it's dull and yellow/orange, it's weak. A sufficient spark is usually bright blue/violet/white.
