Hi folks
I have a little Kawasaki MT1a mini bike from 1973. Great little thing, all road legal as it needs to be here in the UK.
A couple of years ago I pulled the original engine out as it was on its last oversize piston and decided to out it to one side so I didn't wear it out as parts are scarce, especially this side of the pond. So instead I fitted a minarelli AM6 complete with radiator and stuff, pulled straight from an Aprilia rs50. Tuned it up as one does and have been riding it like that for the last 18 months.
Now here is what I want to do. I'd like to keep the AM6 as I have a couple of these but I want to lose the radiator. It is not in keeping with the bike at all and it restricts my turning circle as the forks clash with it. So I'd like to remove the water-cooled cylinder and swap it for an aircooled one. Anything is possible of course with a but of effort. The standard cylinder stud spacing is 52mm x 52mm. And to add the reed assembly is in the case not on the cylinder itself. That rules out the AC minarelli vertical cylinder. The Horizontal minarelli is ok though but uses a 50mm x 50mm stud spacing. I could get around this however I thought I'd throw it out to the forum members and ask first. Does anyone know of an aircooled cylinder that uses an 52mm square stud pattern? Piaggio maybe.......
Chris

Sounds an interesting project. Do you have any pictures? We have a very knowledgeable person, who might be able to help. I'm sure he will be along soon.

Not the best photo but that's the bike with the AM6 fitted.

Ran fairly well in this configuration but the pipe and cylinder made it too peaky for easy riding. It would do 85mph all out but impossible to cruise at 50. It would drop out of the powerband and bog down.
So I want about 10-12hp from a simple aircooled setup. I have the original pipe for it which I want to fit back on and actually make it look like a Kawasaki MT1a again

What is the bore and stroke of that engine?

What is the bore and stroke of that engine? Standard bore and stroke is 40.3mm x 39mm apparently. I do have a long stoke crank separately, 45mm stroke. I'm not adverse to making spacers and whatnot to make things fit. Been looking at some minarelli horizontal 70cc cylinders. I could enlarge the stud holes in that to make it fit but concerned that will make the studs a little close to the cylinder.

Excuse me,just lob this in for thought the air cooled minarelli rely on the fan and shroud to force cool air around the engine, would it work "naked" . Geoff

I agree, most all scoot jugs are fan cooled and do poorly as a free air cylinder..Does this engine have the 45mm stroke crank installed now?

Good point guys. I have already considered this so figured on attaching a CHT gauge and if it runs too hot then I may have to weld some fin extensions on. But agreed, it'll be easier to adapt a cylinder off a 'naked' bike if I could find something that might fit.
The 45mm crank is waiting on my shelf for a home 😁

Thats an idea. I'll order a base gasket as they're cheap and use it to compare the stud spacing and transfer holes.
