A moving neighbor dumped a 2001 yam vino 49-50 YJ50R in the alley. Panels off. screws and plate in a basket next to it. Talk about temping right!?
Well, Ive dumped SO much time and effort into it. After an hour (initially) I got it running. threw panels on it. Was idling fine, spooling on the stand. Jumped on and gave it gas. DIED in the driveway. Troubleshooting- No spark everything in the ignition system checked out as per yam service manual. CDI Ordered:
CDI Battery Main fuse
This morning I had EVERYTHING working great! Ran it for awhile too on the stand. 13.8v to the new battery. Yeah! This thing ran after one kickstart or .5 sec of starter.
Threw everything back on it, got on it, gave it some gas to move and it died. NO SPARK AGAIN. CDI out? And fuse is blown. I pulled the plug and no shock. When I got the CDI it was zapping me good.
I honestly don't know what to do... I am considering throwing it back into the alley if I have to buy another 20 y/o CDI of Ebay.
How can it blow the CDI? I doubt its the coil, but I can check it.
Does anyone please know anything about this kind of issue? I don't see anything shorting to chassis. Thanks..

Poor old CDI,it gets the blame when you can,t find the suspect, most CDI,s are robust the Yamaha more so,it,s likely the coil or ht lead, they are cheap and readily available I would just fit a new one to cross it off the list,or use the directory icon on the left of this screen for self help.

Ya know what? You are correct... The CDI is fine. Now I have an extra one. I must be getting old.. Yeah, I was shorting the 12V to ground. The rear break light switch lead was bouncing off the handle bar.. Rode it to Taco Smell (bell) this morning with all the panels on it, and everything working right. What an experience to have gone through, but in the end I have an (almost) free scooter.
I did read the CDI is good for about 20K miles. Is this true?

Glad you got it sorted,CDI,s don't,t have a milage use to them they work or they don't, lots of vendors have heaps of them they want to shift so "racing" is sales pitch. I have a 17year old and a 30+ scooter still on the original CDI,I don't,t pay any attention to them.

vino's are great scoots for just zipping around the city . derestricted in the exhaust and variator they will push almost 40 mph .
If you have any other questions about yours just ask away .

Funny how I found my old post... That vino now has 3K more miles on it. Still going, but now it's time to put some work into it. Flat spots on rollers. Not sure if anyone know what the factory Gram is? I was just going to order them from Partzilla, but they'll cost $57.

57 bucks for rollers For that price just get a better variator the stock one does hold your peak speed back
6 grams is what was in my stock variator

But one of those cheap scales that fits in your pocket. Ideal for weighing rollers. Or just put all six rollers on the kitchen scales and divide by six.
