Kinda hard to tell if synthetic was used before for sure. Gear oil is used in such a small quantity that a bottle lasts forever for a scoot, so I'd just go with synthetic anyway. Not sure where the bolt is on the 4T long case. Should be near the rear obviously and a lot of times it will look a little different than the other bolts that are holding the gearbox together. Here's a how-to with pics of a common setup... 49ccscoot.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=transtech&action=display&thread=431I wouldn't stress over it if you can't figure out the brand used. Just pick a synthetic you can get easily and suits your budget. In reality, I think you'd be fine with a non-synthetic if you didn't wish to use it. I recommend synthetic oils and use them myself and would not switch back and forth... but the way oils are made has changed since oils first got bad press for causing leaks when you switch over and such, so it may be fine.

Quoted for truth. It's totally fine. There's no reason you can't switch from synthetics to conventionals and vice versa. All the stories about horrible reactions are OLD and no longer true, if they even were to begin with. I advise you to run the least expensive full-synthetic available at your local store, but if you don't want to spring for the synthetic, nothing bad is going to happen, beyond slightly increased engine wear.

I never used synthetic cause I believe that you still get combustion gas blow-by into the engine case which consists of carbon and un-burnt fuel so you still have to change the oil at set intervals anyway and why spend all that money when regular oil is pretty darn slippery already? That's my philosophy anyway. As far as gear oil, I've heard that after the initial break-in period you can drain it and replace it with full syth. and you'll never have to change it again for the life of the scooter and that may be right but i just go ahead and use standard gear oil and change it once in a while for something to do and it makes me feel like I'm doing something good for my scooter.
