I watched the NASCAR race this weekend at the LA coliseum. I have been a on/off fan of NASCAR for decades. But this kind of bothered me. They built a full on asphalt track with all accessories inside the coliseum for this one race. And they made mention that more of these events would be fantastic. Its probably already getting torn down now.
We're at a point where fuel using motor sports are becoming a bigger and bigger target and I think have a chance of being banned within the next 5, maybe 10 years.
And then NASCAR does this. Talk about giving ammunition to the enemy.
I enjoy watching the AMA supercross where they haul in and out dirt. Maybe NASCAR could show some wisdom and setup dirt tracks instead of asphalt at least. That wouldn't seem as over the top.
What do you scooter troops think?

I think nascar is a joke. Born and raised in Daytona Beach, FL and have never been to a race. I have declined free tickets to the 500. Not my thing.

I used to go out to all the races at Heartland Park in Topeka KS. Then I stopped when it was made into a drag race track only. I like watching races where they turn both ways...

I thought the same thing when I watched it. I guess the positive would be that it creates some jobs in the area to build and then demolish a track, but otherwise it seems pretty senseless to me. There had to be an option to rework a track that could have stayed around. They could do something good for a community that way and redo a local track. I guess you can't sell enough tickets at a small facility though and you don't get the hype that you want. All of that for the shortest short track in ages and it didn't even end in a close bumping and banging finish. Should have just ran the pre-season events all at Daytona as usual. Plus, they talk about cutting costs for teams. How about not traveling cross country 1 extra time for that event? How many scooter rides would I have to take on my nasty, smoky, 2T to equal 1 trip of 1 team from LA to Daytona?
We constantly hear messages about going green in today's world, then big business does stuff like this. It's not just NASCAR. A whole lot of major corporations do stupid stuff. I ordered stuff from Wal-Mart and Home Depot recently. Every single item from Home Depot came in a different box. About 10 boxes for 1 order ~$300. I do grocery pickups from Wal-Mart and they've done stuff like ship a small item that costs $1-2 in a big box many times when not in stock in store. I signed up for the Exxon app so I could pay for gas on my phone and get receipts that way. They print a slip every time I fuel up and I can't seem to turn that off. Why spit out the paper that I don't even want? We have to listen to all of the green talk, and then the places that could make more difference in an hour than I could in my life are doing this stuff.
I'd have to imagine you could setup a small track in some of the gigantic parking lots at stadiums. How about a NASCAR auto-x exhibition event? I'd like to see NASCAR do city courses, similar to things that Indy and F1 have done. That also seems like it would waste less resources than building single event tracks.

The public image is horrendous. All it would take is some 60 minutes warrior doing a biased hit piece and the policies would change by nightfall.
They wouldn't bother to show the fuel and energy used or the pollution caused by something like the Boston Marathon, but they would damn well show a top fueler running down the track with 6' flames shooting out.
Just seems so ignorant of NASCAR.
My personal favorite is motorcycle racing, especially road racing. I had a pretty busy working career but one of my best memories was going to Daytona bikeweek 1989. I saw the flat track, the Supercross and several road races, topped off with the 200 Not for everybody, but I'd hate to see it all cancelled out.

firstly im a big motorsport fan... I love F1 and classic saloon car racing.
im lucky that i have several circuits within an hour or two's drive from my house.
But sadly being British, Nascar is Alien to me. We do get some coverage of Nascar on the sattelite channels over here, and I have tried to watch it, but watching cars going round an Oval, with drivers Im not familiar with on the T.V never really excited me.
I understand Nascar racing is massive in America, along with Indy car racing...
Heres a quick video of some British classic saloon car racing which may be of interest to Americans an epic battle between a Chevrolet Camaro and a european ford capri
