Anybody here into collecting anything? Pocket knives, vintage stuff, stamps, etc?
I don't have a huge pocket knife collection by some standards, but by other's I'm a knife nut. you don't have that many, but I have quite a few high quality ones. Primarily Spydercos, I'm a huge para 2 and para 3 fan, and have a handful of sprint runs. I can detail more if anyone is interested.
I haven't been out hunting them in a while, but I also like to hunt down old tools and refurb them. Especially axes, if I can find them. In recent years that has caught on, and they are very difficult or wildly more expensive these days apart from the odd score. But yeah, I've got dozens of Golden age axes, and some contemporary production really nice ones, as well. but, the golden age American axes are the finest ever made in the world. W.C. Kelly actually invented the Bessemer process before Bessemer did! Kelly Axe & Tool being the origins of True Temper.
and I'm an avid canoeer, so I've got way too many paddles. 😅 something like 16 of them. the quest for the perfect paddle has been a thing of mine for a long time. and I had it until I messed it up, and of course it's irreplaceable. 🤦
at this point I'm starting to sound like a hoarder, so anybody else a collector or connoisseur of something?

As an avid birdwatcher in my local county,I am now steeped in the history of my avian local history thanks to these reports first published in 1960 and annually since then,a very niche booklet and I have the full set (almost) purchased for a few$$$ here and there over a ten year period. This one plucked at random was printed when I was 13!!,I have 1 copy of most,a few copies of some ready to trade, but sadly I am missing 1 year I won,t say which one but I may have to wait till someone passes to acquire it.obsessive no not me. Geoff Oh! I know all about you birding lot! lol. On more than one occasion I've pulled up to a usually empty trailhead to find dozens of vehicles, and a lot of people with their binocs and cameras out. And I'll find out somebody spotted something rare in the area and shared location online. Your periodicals there are like the pre-internet version of that, looks like! That's too cool. You should visit some of the areas and take note of what you spot at those locations now, and compare to when they were printed!

Do tools count? Engine performance related books?
I've got 6 guitars, a banjo and a bass, but they're all cheap stuff and the banjo, bass and 2 guitars were inherited or given to me. I had a drum kit but I sold it because I wanted room in the garage more than the drums and I was never any good at them anyway. I'd love to have something nice like a PRS guitar. I play my friend's Custom 22 regularly and it's so much nicer than anything I own in sound, feel and overall quality, but it was also $3,000+. I've considered selling all of my guitars aside from 2 acoustics to get just 1 like that, but then I realized that all combined they're not worth half that. lol
I collected baseball cards from elementary school through high school. That sucked. I took them to an auction that my mother told me would be great for selling them since I wasn't really into them anymore and would rather have their value in car parts. I was going to sort them out, but I was told the auction would handle it and that it would be advertised that there would be a lot of baseball card to attract interested parties. Turned out, they didn't do either. 10 years of collecting with 10+ binders and I don't even know how many boxes and at least a hundred cards in plastic cases... and I got $15 sold in a lot. They never even described them to bidders beyond a lot of baseball cards. I didn't have anything really expensive, but stuff like Rickey Henderson, Cal Ripken and Michael Jordan baseball rookie cards in excellent condition and a Ted Williams card. I saved 1 card. An autographed Cal Ripken All-Star. Went to sell it on eBay years later and Cal Ripken's reps forced it to be taken down because they didn't want his autograph sold at that time. Sold it to someone for $1 because it was worthless to me at that point. I was no longer a fan of him or any of it and went from watching baseball games weekly to not watching a whole game in 20+ years now.

And heck yeah, engine tuning references count as well! Trading cards are a bummer. I was never really into that. My ex-wife was before she met me, and I wound up with boxes of sports cards. Are any of them worth money anymore? It just seems like the bottom fell out of that. I also got left with a couple tupperwares full of her beanie babies. 😂😂

[I wound up with boxes of sports cards. Are any of them worth money anymore? It just seems like the bottom fell out of that. When I was in middle school, there was a local shop that would buy and sell cards pretty leisurely. Using a Beckett guide mostly and they were fair. Seems like it all turned to having to sell graded cards if you wanted any real money out of them. I took a few cards to a shop to sell them and they wanted to give me next to nothing ungraded. The problem is, AFAIK, grading is going to cost something like $20 for a card and up and can be really long turnaround times. It seems like a racket to me that if your card is worth more they charge more. Possibly a lot more. Sports card grading seems like a better thing to get into than sports card collecting. If there are still more laid back shops around, then maybe it's not so difficult to sell.
