so yesterday I was plowing along when my engine died I knew straight away piston or head cause I had no compression.
after I got recovered it was too late in the afternoon to be tearing her apart so this morning I had a look. turns out the bolt that retains the adjustable part of the rocker arm has worked loose and done some serious damage.
I did pre-check all the nuts and bolts when I put it back together but obv that one was not tight enough!
I'll post some pics soon enough show you my misfortune.

I have new parts on order and going to buy aload of oil and keep flushing it through the crankcase. good or bad idea?
and looking to buy a rare earth magnet I can glue to a stick and poke it right in and around the engine.

Yikes. Sorry to see that. Definitely do everything you can to flush the crankcase. You might want to use something thinner for flushing, kerosene is a popular choice. Change the oil soon after it's back together as well. A magnetic drain plug wouldn't be a bad idea for even more peace of mind.

I have several strong magnets from harbor freight. I have a few different sizes on telescoping wands, their strong. Autozone usually has different size probes with magnets and even LEDs on the end.
Except for the valve, all the debris will be aluminum. I think the extra flushing is your better idea. I think I would spray down the inside of the crankcase with a little cleaner. Open both the oil drain plug and the oil filter cover. Dont spray right on the oil seals with cleaner. Then do a couple flushing routines.

I used to have a rig when I did automatic trannys in cars. This was for flushing out metal contaminated fluid from the transmission cooler. It was basically a pump, engine oil filter and some hoses going to a bucket of K1. I would circulate this for like 10 or 15 mins.

I know a guy that ruined a good smallblock by running it with an oil cooler that had metal in it from the previous blowup. I felt for him... You only do this once!

Sorry to hear this after all the work you have done getting that thing running.
I wrote up a how to adjust your valves topic and I made sure to include: "Tighten the lock nut very tight. Don't break the rocker arm, but the last thing you want is for it to loosen up on you 35 miles from home." on step 7.
I recently repaired a scooter that had a bad lower connecting rod bearing. Some of the metal shavings were caught on the outside of the oil screen so I don't think any got into the pump. The screen seemed to work rather well actually. I took the entire engine apart and sprayed the metal out of the cases with the water hose. I wiped them off with a towel and reassembled it the next day after it dried out all night. There's no substitute for doing it right and there's a lot of nooks and crannies inside the engine for metal to get caught even if you flush it out.

I saw a thread once on some forum where a guy JB Welded a coin shaped magnet to the inside the oil screen cap to catch stuff too. He kind of roughed it up so it would stick on real good but even if it came loose the screen will hold it in the cap. I think he got it off a refrigerator magnet.

its a live and let learn sort of thing I honestly did tighten it up but obv not enough.
have a magnet now going to JB weld one onto my plug and start flushing the engine when I have time to go to a store and buy a few liters of oil going to use non branded stuff to flush with no point paying out the buck only to be pouring it away. save me good stuff for running her on.
got named brand big bore this time the Naraku 47mm one, heard good things about Naraku as a company. if this bore has more power then the cheaper one I last bought I may buy their A9 cam and variator too.
On a very side note, heard very mixed reviews about the Naraku 10% gear kit think its 14/52? anybody have this kit installed?

the magnets from those flashlites you shake to build a charge are REALLY strong. flashlites are cheap crap so it wont hurt to tear one apart.
