If makers didn't guard their plans and models some of the Chinese factories would prob be releasing knock-offs before the real things were ever made.

Those Chinese factories wait and see whats going to be popular thanks to the Big 4's marketing campaign's and participation in various powersports events / races. Once all the hard work is done and it's time to cash in on your investment the Chinese show up and undercut the same people that created the industry they profit from.
Don't imitate, innovate.

Yes but:
The root cause of the Chinese "knocking off" product, be it Japanese, Italian, or American, is greed.
You have only to look at the air tool industry. We made air tools quite successfully in N. America for many years, then those morons figured out that they could lay us all off, and get their product made in China a LOT cheaper..... tripling and quadrupling their profits. Now it is all made in China, and depending whose name is on it, is the price you are going to pay for identical product. Have a nice day.
We are seeing Chinese made Peugeots, Vespas and Lambrettas. ALL at inflated prices for Chinese product. At some point you will be sourcing product direct lacking nothing but the name.

Even honda, suzuki, yamaha and triumph get bikes or parts made in the far east and India now. The big four jap bike manufacters all use old bike designs now in their copyright drawings to stop the chinese copies
