Did a valve adjustment to .004" on both. Motor is chattering now.
I suppose I need to drop that down to .003"?

Betta nickel if you go and re-check your adjustment, you can fit a larger gauge flat in than a .003". Sometimes it is difficult to hold the cam follower back to find correct clearance. Other times the adjuster screw moves just a little bit when you tighten the jam nut. In short, you have to adjust, check, rotate crankshaft two turns back to TDC a second time, and check the adjustment again. My experience on adjusting valve clearances varies depending on what is being adjusted. V8 engines with self-locking nuts are the easiest as all you have to do is turn the nut back and forth until the feeler can more with a little drag. Small 4-cylinder engines such as in AH Sprite are harder, as is the engine in a Renault something. But it sure makes a difference when you take the time and go through the adjust-check-adjust-check procedure until you are absolutely certain you have the correct clearance, and can repeatably get the same 'feel' every time. Keep the same clearance you like and check again and again and ... tom
