Oil filter spring for Wolf RX50

Apparently the spring that goes inside with the filter was inadvertantly disposed of on a previous oil change. I’m guessing it fell into the used oil receptacle and I ended up just putting the filter back in and calling it a day. Just noticed this when I changed my oil yesterday. Again, i put the filter back in, closed up shop and refilled the oil. Can someone please tell me what exactly the spring does and if any harm could be caused by running without it? TIA.

The spring holds the filter against the internal seal and seals against oil pressure.
Yes it is important.
Going by this site, it looks like a typical GY6 50-150cc
If so, you also have a cone shaped screen as well

Thank you! Yep, that’s the one, cone-shaped filter. So you would advise not running for another 500 miles until the next oil change. Bad things could happen? Seems to be fine from the last 500 without it. I know, I know, oil’s cheap. Just a PITA if not necessary.
