Yeah it's mad here. You could end up doing one full days training. Then over time, three motorcycle test to get a full licence here.

You guys would prob be really shocked then to find out how many people here don't even bother with a motorcycle license. I've seen estimates of 20-25% of riders have no motorcycle license. Not sure exactly how they figure this out. I know it's fairly common though. There are also people that only get permits. Some states let you get a permit over and over and don't have much restriction so they don't even bother getting a license. Some ride with no plates at all or fold their plates up (even licensed riders) and plan to run if someone attempts to pull them over. You could probably guess that this is most common with sport bikes.
What surprises me is that I think of other parts of the world as having many more riders per capita so I thought maybe that's why our process is a little easier. I looked it up and we're not too far off percentage wise for motorcycles and scooters, unless you're in Italy, Greece, Spain or Germany where the percentage is about double the others on the list. I think if they tracked only scooters, we'd be way below those areas and probably higher on the list if only large motorcycles were tracked.

When I got my motorcycle endorsement the agent just asked me if I wanted one. I said yes, since I had ridden a few motor bikes from 70-150cc. I don't even think it was a higher fee. The main danger to riding a 200+ Hp bike is to the life of the rider if you don't learn how to ride. I mainly learned from other riders. I don't ride two wheel vehicles at all anymore due to balance problems.
I also have what is called a class A chauffeur license in Kansas for driving commercial vehicles over 26,000 pounds that was a freebie when a company I worked for wanted me to drive a concrete truck. They apparently trusted me with an 80,000 pound vehicle with 20 forward gears. They called the DMV and I showed up at the office the next day and with a small fee I had a class B in my hands, no test at all. It was converted to a class A when I turned 21 to allow me to drive buses and hazardous chemicals like petrol etc. I never got what is called a modern commercial driver's license because the state of Kansas wrote the grandfather clause dates wrong. I have used the class A many times to drive rental trucks from Penske. I no longer have access to large vehicles to take the driving test. I would also have some studying to do to pass the written test. I am not sure I could pass the physical, I am just too old.

In the early 70's when I was 16 you could ride a 50cc on a learner's licence you renewed every yr or took your test. At 17 you could ride Upto a 250 and do the same. No theory test involved hop on and twist the throttle. In the early 80's they bought that down to 125cc that's when I took my test as happy with 250's. Mopeds in 77 were restricted to 30 but didn't have to have pedals anymore. UK bike law is totally different now.

Is it true in some states wearing a helmet while riding a bike in traffic isn't mandatory?

Yeah it does sound crazy. Is it true in some states wearing a helmet while riding a bike in traffic isn't mandatory? Yup. I live 15-20 miles from the Delaware state line. Delaware has no helmet law. I've watched people pull over and take off their helmet and hang it on the back of the bike when they cross into DE before. I guess that's freedom to them, but I'm happy looking at the world through my auto-darkening visor.

I won’t even do test laps around my street without my helmet. I rode the first month on my unmodified 49cc without one.

Just curious, what helmet and visor do you have that auto darkens? Bell Qualifier DLX. It came with the photochromic shield. I like the shield a lot.

In Wisconsin a lot of people pay a few hundred dollars to take a motorcycle course through a public tech school. You get the license after completing the course.
i took a 15 minute learners permit test at the DMV after reading a short booklet. drove my piaggio bv200 for a month. then scheduled a drivers test which took 20 minutes. Person acknowledged my lack of clutch and was confused but i passed.
i recently drove a 1985 honda sabre 700cc and was immediately like, "not sure my motorcycle endorsement prepared me for this" lol

You should be fine Rob. Just practise some slow speed manoeuvring. It's a lot harder riding slow, than fast. Who knew?
