I personally do not have any experience with that pipe. I have also never seen a pipe with a union placed in it like that, could be a repair I guess?

yeah i assume it’s a repair i plan on taking it apart and rewelding it i assume it broke in half? i’ve noticed i can move the expansion chamber and it doesn’t move the piece connected to the head so obviously something is going on
