 Last weekend I spent my day off finding the bad wire splice for my right rear blinker/brake lights. The previous owner had done such a hack job on it, putting in a trailor light setup, cut into the main harness and used a 1/4 inch wire end to twist the ends in...basically It fell apart, I just had to find the spot and redo. I still don't know if that trailor light setup works. So the license plate lights, again right side, the bulb was blown, and I find the left side was just cut off...replaced the socket for the left, replaced both bulbs, and NOW I have a left license plate light, but the right still doesn't light, and my right running light is out. No undoing the left socket didn't fix it. :swear: I am thinking to replace that whole section of harness. It would probably take less time than trying any longer than I have to sort that mess out. It is still dark out when I drive my kid to school, and already dark when I get done with work and pick her up again, so frustrating. And F'n cold.

Previous owner wiring is almost always a nightmare. Get the multimeter out or start re-wiring I guess. The running light was working before the tag light stuff and then went out after or it never worked?

Wiring, darkness and cold not a good combination

The running light was working, and the tag light on the right was blown. Those two are on the same section of wire, once I put a new socket on the left side (found the wires cut and no socket) that left works now,but I lost the running light and that tag light stil failed to work with a new bulb. They all come off the same wire. Would it be ok to run a wire from the left for just those running lights?

double check that your getting power there if there is power then its a bad ground

The ground there goes to the blinker, brake, and running lights on that side. Ground is connected to frame, and the brake and blinker lights are working on both sides. The ground from the trailor setup is not connected. I have to hunt down the wiring diagram again #%@, can't find it, but the brown wire goes to running lights and tag lights, green right, yellow left...LOL, simular to a scooter just not, black ground. Throw any suggestions you want at me, I only have a little time in the morning to mess with it, and can't get to the junk yard till wed.hope to not get pulled over before I get it going.

If you have a volt meter(get one if you dont!),check for voltage at the center pin of the socket, ground voltmeter to bumper,if you have juice there, its gotta be a funky ground..if no voltage and its a running light, yes you can splice to the other working running light..I bet its a ground problem.. :2cents:

My voltmeter failed on me. Some days are just like that. New batteries failed to fix it. I will connect the trailor light ground, see if the left ground is connected, look for any more grounds sliced into by the butcher of truck wires, and if I can't find anything else I'll have to splice into the left known live wire and look for a different rear harness, ebay $50. Orrr, perhaps the correct trailor light wires could correct the problem? This setup, center picture, replaces what was hacked into.. www.ebay.com/itm/1998-2004-CHEVY-S10-S15-SONOMA-TRAILER-HITCH-WIRING-/120638124794?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ASonoma&vxp=mtr&hash=item1c1697b2fa I only remember redoing the 3 wires, yellow, green, and I thought a black ground...I'll look for the ground there... the ground on the actual trailor plug is cut off of the connector, and loose?...I will see what I can find in the morning. Replacing with a good trailor wire would correct the cobble job maybe without the whole truck rear harness? I'll call around local before I order this but it should be done

yeah if the hack job is in the area that gets replaced with the proper harness i would give that a shot try fleet farm they have a lot of the diffrent plug and play harnesses

Think I'll yank out that trailor mess in the morning before work, and splice the original wires without it, that will get rid of that ground question there...find the 4th wire I must have missed I think they left that ground whole for some reason and didn't connect their wires to it at all....maybe my splice there came loose, see what happens, then look for this local. I feel a little better now. I have a plan to work with that won't break my piggy bank. It has to involve that hack job somwhere...Thanks guys

Well, ran to O'Reilleys first thing after dropping off my kid and got the trailor light setup, got that in in 3 minutes, but the right running lights were still out. The 2 grounds left and right are connected well (problem with the big plug the grounds all connect together in?). I ran a wire from the left tag wire to the right tag wire, and all running lights are a go. As I expected to splice all 3 running wires to get them going, and I didn't touch the ground wires, WTF. It will keep me from getting pulled over til I can get the rear light harness ordered. I don't trust it. I have to get to work now, I'll check out the diagram again later and see if it clicks.
