First off, did anyone on this board know about this? And if not, who figured this out?
a recent ZX50 scooter i bought had the stock CDI wires cut and then the wires for a 5-wire 2 stroke CDI was wired in. A small, AC one. I believe the Kymco one is a larger DC one though.
Anyway, i assumed it would never work, but just to test i put it on my running ZX50 and it also worked. The CDI is labeled TGB, so i would guess for a minarelli type originally. Since the replacement cable had the same connection, I threw on the stock CDI i have laying around from a Genuine Roughhouse R50 and it also worked. i'll test a honda one too but wanted to share right away. These two non-kymco CDIs also have no RPM restriction.
If this is new information, or if it would be helpful i could take off the electrical tape that's covering up the wire connectors to show what colors attaching to what. Just let me know. Using these easily available CDIs would cost less than replacing with a stock or Naraku one when they break/wear out.

Yup! Everyone thinks it's a DC CDI but it has the 5 wires as an AC CDI. On my first build I used a Minarelli CDI and it ran amazing forever.... until I realized Minarelli use a shorter stroke crank than the ZX, so the CDIs actually have different timing. The Minarelli should make it run a degree or two more retarded than the Kymco CDI. I kinda think this helps with break in, pushing the heat out of the cylinder into the pipe... just a guess.

this engine also came with a kit and a airsal cylinder head that appears to be for a horizontal. kind of seems like someones "get this out of my garage it never runs right" project. maybe involves some mismatched parts issues.

Actually, I posted about it in one of your threads in 2019. It completely surprised me the first time I saw it myself. I have no idea who came up with it and when, likely some guy in a bind. Lol

i tested out the zx50 with a few CDIs. the stock CDI is definitely better matched for the scooter. I ran it with one i pulled off an old honda sa50 elite and it ran like trash. the minarelli ones aren't restricted but it didnt have the same throttle throughout the band.
as far as i can tell the wiring colors matched up exactly so there wasn't any guessing.

I did feel a little more power on the butt-dyno when I switched from the Minarelli back to the stock CDI. I had derestricted the stock CDI tho. (two green wires, splice them together so it grounds out)
