If you ever get the opportunity to go don’t make excuses just do it. This island is a fascinating place. Three miles wide and ten miles long with a max elevation of 1500 feet above sea level. Pictures just do not do it Justice at all. I seriously would move here once my parenting obligations run out.

when I was younger, I took a bucket of my hanging tools ; after I researched St.Thomas for work possibilities etc. , put myself on a plane and went down there for ?? a couple of months?? . stayed at a hostel . got a bit of work at a Publix they were building . went up to some higher elevations in the "mountains" - saw Maureen O"Hara's home where she retired too. St. Johns island is only a hop, skip and a jump from St.Thomas. people talked about how nice it is too.

Can't do it. Sounds like I'd die there. From 2 different people and I didn't read many reviews...
"Riding a scooter on STT is the most dangerous way to see the island for a tourist visitor - the hills are steep, with many blind curves and the roads are narrow and filled with small stones, potholes, oil slicks and banked the wrong way for bikes. Plus we drive on the left side.
Navigation by roadsigns is non-existent and pull over places are rare.
Many of the scooters are underpowered even when advertised for 2 riders. Braking on the downhill roads is particularly tricky.
Traffic is sometimes overwhelming especially on busy cruise ship days.
You could not pay me to ride a scooter here much less pay to rent one - I have been here a long time and actually know the roads. I would never recommend it for anyone but a real thrill seeking experienced biker."
"Unless you have a death wish this is definitely NOT the best way to get around the islands. Picture yourself on a steep hill on a scooter with an 18wheeler tracktor trailer on you tail. People on the scooters do not look like they are having a good time. You are better off renting a car and enjoying yourself."
Glad you're loving it though. I just can't function without 2 wheels and a fairly laid back atmosphere.

I’ve seen a few scooters, few motorcycles. I would not recommend riding here. Speed limits are mostly stupidly slow, half the west end of the island is posted 10 mph. This is widely ignored. Fastest limit is 35. (60) Wrong side, curves and hills, it’s a hoot if you like them. I do.

I've been to the Bahamas when I was a kid. Drivers there, at least cab drivers for sure, were wild. I think the trip from the cruise ship to the hotel could have been narrated by the dude from World's Wildest Police Chases. Is St Thomas like that?

Well they drive pretty damn fast here for the conditions. I don’t mind it so much, but every turn is the corkscrew at Laguna Seca. I left foot brake here just to shorten the reaction time.
