I'm trying to fix my girlfriends taotao50 scooter for her, it only has about 30 miles total on it but she has let it sit for a few years in the garage because of this issue, it started happening around the second day she rode it, it starts up fine but when you give it gas it just kind of dies and fizzles out,, it stays running but only goes a few feet, so basically the gas does nothing, I can work on standard motorcycles fairly well, I rebuilt the carb on her suzuki 125 dirtbike but this thing is a mystery to me, It sounds to me like bad gas or a clogged fuel fillter or line, or some kind of vaccum lock problem with the carb, I swapped out the gas but I'm not even sure what poses as a carburator on this little thing, are there any documentation in english describing this engine anywhere? or does anyone have any tips for me or has ran into this before? I really appreciate any help ya'll can offer me, I'd love to be able to surprise here with a working scooter for her birthday coming up soon. and get the thing out of my garage since its just gathering dust now lol.

There is a lot of information here to help you solve your problem. If you look in the floating menu on the left you will see a directory, scooter FAQ and manuals. Start there and you will probably find your solution.

I would definitely start by checking fuel delivery. Then the carb. If you suck on the carb vacuum line. Fuel should flow in a stream out of the fuel line. Perhaps the accelerator pump is not working. My wife's Aprilia had a similar fault, and that was the problem.

That pump gets its fuel from the float bowl via a TINY hold drilled through to the base of the pump. If clogged, no fuel to the little reservoir, and no squirty. The throttle linkage has a flat lever that pushes down on the pump shaft. Mis-adjusted will not move the pump shaft as early as it should, and does not squirt until too late. It should squirt as soon as the throttle plate starts to move. tom

I agree with them. the carb is the first thing I would be checking as well. you may also consider the possibility of an air leak. an effective way to find one is (carefully) spray a suitable fluid on the areas where a leak can happen. my air tube and my intake manifold have both had leaks and I have a tao tao as well. the crack on the intake manifold was right along the clamp so it was hidden and the spray exposed it. don't forget to take the spark plug out and look at it. check for spark, the gap, the color, and how wet it is.
