This will be a winter project but the pile-O-parts has grown to the point where I deemed a reveal appropriate. Here’s the donor scooter which is currently hidden from the wife’s prying eyes in a super-secret off-site location I had an idea of what I wanted to do with this one and yesterday, my vision of what other parts I could recycle became a reality. I found these beauties in my scrapper friend’s junk pile. They are front fenders from a Peterbuilt semi tractor and they are made out of aluminum. If you squint your eyes and tilt your head at just the right angle, you may be able to tell that semi truck fenders are actually long extrusions of scooter front body panels. There are probably 6 of them sitting in my driveway right now! This one will be built (second try) for my wife. I’ll build this one with her input as I go as I don’t want a repeat of the first disappointment. The concept at this point is a classic scooter design like her current Vino. I’ll make the seat a bit lower. I’ll stick with the current 50cc case but build it as an 80cc (already have all the parts. And I think I can stretch the seating area so she can have our daughter as a passenger without stretching the frame… maybe a bit of super-scoot vibe. My wife really enjoyed our recent scooter trip in the South Dakota Black Hills but longed for some more speed and a lot more torque going up the hills. Hopefully, I can tick all the boxes with this one. If not, I’ll sell it and move on to the next build.

It’s confirmed. The yield of scooter front body panels from a pair of semi front fenders is 6! That leaves me a few spares to mess up while I figure out how to do this. I think a TIG welder is in my future!

Sandblasted the donor power plant today. It had a thick layer of aluminum oxide on all the unpainted aluminum surfaces. I masked off all (most) of the orifices and it cleaned up pretty well. I’ll be doing a complete rebuild involving an 80cc big bore kit, A9 cam, and I will probably release all my CDO (OCD in proper alphabetical order) and polish all the porting while I’m in there. Any sand that might have found it’s way inside will be cleaned out when I give the cases an ultrasonic bath.

That's going to be another interesting project. If only Vespa would make their bodywork out of aluminium. Seems that the gauntlet has been thrown down. My days and nights for the past few weeks have been filled with watching YouTube videos of metal shaping and automotive body panel fabrication. I believe it is possible. Tomorrow, I shall purchase a section of 6x6 post in order to make a shrinking stump and I will begin applying the techniques I have learned. I’m sure the learning curve will be steep, initial results less than satisfactory, and the end product will be a long time coming but, as they say, how hard can it be to beat aluminum scooter panels from flat sheets? In other news, I ordered a special part for enhanced engine performance that should greatly reduce the overall lifespan of the motor. The installation of this part begs for a custom aluminum air shroud. Maybe that’s the first part to be beaten from a flat sheet!

It's surprising how you can beat stuff into shape with a mallet and sandbag. Then put in on an English wheel to get a smooth finish. You can buy English wheels that clamp into a vice on a bench. Saving space. Will definitely be a steep learning curve.

Aluminum is really fun, you can use a torch to ammeal it and make it really malleable. Don't need any fancy tig or anything to weld Aluminum sheets, just a torch and aluminum rods.
Ummm, watch motorcycle mania 1 with Jessie James, he kinda shows the process and may help you what you can make with almost nothing.

Started building my shrinking stump…. …and I bought a sheet of .055” aluminum. Due to lack of space, I have it rolled up and sitting on top of my mill. Next week, I will take it to a friend of mine and shear it into a few manageable size pieces. (The sheet is 55”x96”)

Yes it is. But I’m questioning if this will allow me to meet my build specifications. First off, will horsepower gained be more than horsepower used to spin the supercharger? Second, will I be able to work something to remove some of the heat produced by the supercharger? Finally, will I still have enough space under the seat for storage so the wife can go to the grocery store and feed the family?
