Hi,
For engine safety and reliability, how to tell if the fuel ratio is between 12:1-13:1 without expensive tools (wideband) just by experimental tricks ?

Best performance top speed and responsiveness ,sound no zing zing meaning too lean or glue Glub meaning too rich and brown plug color are all great clues

If you actually want to look at AFR, then you need a wideband. You don't need to know AFR to tune though. Test and tune works wonders and I do that even when I can see AFR. WOT is done with acceleration results for me. Part throttle is often feel and sound and you can read plugs if needed. Pilot and mix screw is generally idle quality and if revs hang or it loads up.
For a four-stroke, I like a wideband if you do want a really good tuning/monitoring aid. For a two-stroke, get an EGT. The monitoring aspect is great with both.
