Hey guys, first post despite being registered since 2013
I'm looking for some help. I have a 2012 Kymco Like 50. As of recently I've been getting into scooter racing at MopedGP East (Lafayette NY). I've been bitten by the bug and I'm trying to improve my bike. I've been to two races now and I've done decent, 3rd the first time and 2nd the second time (but the two fast guys from the first race didn't come for the second). My bike isn't the typical racer but I've accepted the challenge and I'm having fun tuning it.
Long story short, I've exhausted all off the shelf parts to make my bike faster. Heres my current setup:
Malossi 70cc Sport Cyl
Dellorto PHBG 19 carb
Tecnigas Triops pipe
Malossi Var
Malossi Torque Driver
Malossi Belt
Polini Speed Clutch
Stock Gears (far better for the track than my upgear kit)
Inspired by Brent's youtube videos, most of these mods have been made taking go pro video and logging time data for each modification. So I figured out what appears to be optimal belt size, roller weight, var shimming, clutch opening, torque driver groove, and torque spring. I even had to modify the torque assembly as the malossi td initially rubbed the case half. I'm mostly tuning for acceleration while trying to balance that with loss of top speed as the track is mostly turns.
I know my 0-35 is about 11 seconds. Brent has a sweet playlist where he essentially did what I am doing (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD60FEB66F10B4BD6) and achieved 0-35 in about 8 seconds. So it may be that I am not as optimal as I think.
Now the guys that beat me the first time around crushed me. They were running Honda's, I think Dio and Elite with I believe off the shelf setups. I see there are race cylinders made for them. For my bike, it appears there are only three options for cylinders, Malossi, Polini, and Airsal. All seem to be marketed as sport cylinders rather than race. Most run the Malossi cyl, I have fount one mediocre review regarding the Airsal, and crickets regarding the Polini. Since I have exhausted off the shelf parts at this point, I'm looking now to do actual modifications to existing parts. But I don't know how to do that. I have a second Malossi cylinder coming which I'm hoping to do some work to, but what should I be doing? I imagine ports need to be shaped and compression should be increased. Do I need to match cyl powerband to the pipe? How do I do that?
I also realize rider weight and technique come into play. I am working on that as well.
Basically I'm trying to see how much water I can squeeze from a stone lol
Here is a video of practice: youtu.be/lL7dM1oBTxg Other videos including races are on the channel as well. Any feedback on the bike would be greatly appreciated.
Also I encourage anyone who wants to race to join. We aren't super serious and out there to just have fun. All experience levels are welcome. Races are typically in June and September.
