Hi Everyone, Thanks for the add. Here to learn a little more about tunning 50cc. More for fun then anything else. I've got grey hair and have owned several bikes (now have a blade) so I'm very conscious about safty and speed :-) Anyway...I have a 2011 Piaggio Zip 2T AC. I would like to use it to communte to work but it just struggles to keep up in traffic. I tried some "basic" mods to start with: - Malossi Red Filter - Racing Exhaust TECNIGAS Next R - 6.5 gram rollers - Harder springs - Main jet 62 - Pilot Jet 32 - Dellorto 17.5 - Scooter has 2000km (basically new) -Standard air box with snorkel still inserted. Here are some picks of a new spark plug after a 20km ride. Speed is ok.....get up to 60km/h well then slow up to 70km/h and then struggels up to about 75km/h. Question - 1 : is this performance more or less normal? Any experience with a similar set up from anyone? Question - 2 : Spark plug looks like I could go up a size in main ? Maybe a 64? Question - 3 : Upgrade to a 70cc kit. I was thinking of the Stage 6 Sport Pro 70cc . Would I need to upgrade the carb from a 17.5 to the 19mm ? I assume the answer is yes but I've also read that the difference is not much and the 17.5 can work well. Do I need a Malossi Variator (or similar) to get the most out of the kit or can I just tweak the rollers? If so what weight would you reccomend? Air box mods?

I think I may have posted in the wrong thread....2 Stroke Scooters And Mopeds seems best. Is there an admin to move this post?

Welcome to the forum!
You noted Malossi red filter. Is that a replacement filter for the stock airbox or a pod filter? If it's a pod filter, I'd go back to the stock airbox and I'd also suspect that the main jet may be too small for it.
I don't bother reading plugs for tuning unless I'm baffled by strange results with trial and error tuning. I just try different main jets and compare acceleration info or with stock scoots maybe just check speed over a distance back and forth.
A 17.5mm should be able to work. If I were going to go larger from the 17.5, then I'd probably go to the 21mm version instead.

The bike should be able to do 75kph on the gps. On the speedo 90 isn't out of the ordinary.
If it's 75 on the speedo something is off. Did you derestrict the pipe? If yes, try some very heavy rollers (7,5gr) and see if top speed improves.

If you don't have a temp gauge already installed, get one as soon as possible. The gauge will tell you what you are doing as far as jetting and will save your engine.

I did lightent the rollers to get some of the mark power......are you saying this comprimised top speed?

Have you got a link to one so I can see it? I have no idea where to measure temp on a 2 stroke. That sounds complicated? What temp would it be measuring, the combustion chamber?

If you are overshooting your peak power rpm (because of too light rollers), yes. Too light rollers will negatively affect top speed AND acceleration! With too heavy rollers acceleration will be bad, ofcourse. But since the engine has to run though the whole rpm range, it allows you to determine where peak power rpm sits. Afterwards you can go back to the desired roller weight.
