It's Endless Summer Cruisin' weekend in Ocean City, MD. Initially I was hoping to ride with Ryan and maybe get a guy with a fast e-bike to show up and potentially another RC-One scoot on Saturday. The forecast was for a washout Saturday and plans were cancelled. Naturally now it doesn't look awful, though still rain coming through for a bit and night temps in the 50s with 15-20MPH winds.
Friday was nice. In the low 70s at the beach and pretty calm, so I figured I better get my riding in then if I was gonna do any. It started out somewhat uneventful. As usual lately, cars won't do much. I was actually about to be in what is sort of a dream race with a Lamborghini and a Camaro at a light and some guy in a Corvette had to pull out in front of me just as the light turned green. The Lambo waited a sec and then did take off briefly, but I was hoping to see if I could get even a half second jump on him.
The scoot wanted to fight me for a long time. I was struggling with idle. I could set it and get it to idle at 2400-2500RPM and then go out and ride and it's trying to die at red lights again if I don't hold the throttle a little. I hold the throttle a little and then it's really rich and loads up. I did that over and over again, thinking eventually I'd get it set right but it never worked.
After a bit I decided to lean the needle a step because it was also drowning at low throttle trying to get around town. I couldn't really power wheelie from a 25-30MPH roll either. I think this is the first time I've moved the needle on this thing in a year and a half of having the RC-One. You can see that I found a bunch of bubble gum looking oil goo in there.
The leaner needle setting helped and the idle was better and power wheelies at speed were back. My EGTs were higher, but we're talking 800 degrees at low throttle vs 500-600. Nothing alarming for what I was doing, but I don't think it would work for regular riding trying to sustain more speed. My EGT decided to quit on me, but I saw enough to not panic.
I got to town just before 1PM and at 6:30 I was trying to decide whether to stay or go 1 more lap. It seemed like more people were coming out and it was a little more fun, so I went for another. Not long into that lap a couple of two-strokes got beside me at a light and said hi. Went a couple of streets and they wanted to pull over. The scoots are both Jogs. The white one is a 70cc and was repainted by the guy with the red Jog. It has an interesting pipe that loops around the back.
It's owner builds imports and likes engine work a lot. He's got a 600WHP Acura and a 9.50 drag Civic. He is trying to play with stock engines now and see if he can get a record tweaking everything he can while being "stock" but with a lot of boost. He's been 10-something in the 1/4 on a stock CRX or CRV engine... I forget which and not being a Honda guy wouldn't know the difference anyway... but that's pretty badass.
The red one is stock aside from a V8 pipe and he said he wants to keep it that way. It's pretty unique being as old as it is (I forget the year, but 80s or 90s) and he's the second owner with 941 miles on it when I looked at the cluster. Apparently it's the classic story that it belonged to an old man that garage kept it and it was sold when he passed. Interesting note... He has another Jog that's more modified. He set the body up with a few large clips that you pull to clamp together and can split the body to remove it or gain access. Showed me a couple of pics on his phone.
We talked for a bit and waited for another friend of theirs with a scoot. He showed up with a lowered GY6 scoot. The first 2 guys are from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and both speak Spanish and English. The last guy spoke no English so I don't know much about it. The other guys said it was around 160cc but it ran hard so I dunno. It was also painted by the guy with the red Jog.
I wound up hanging out with those guys till about 12:30AM. The dude with the orange scoot is crazy... and I mean that pretty much in a good way. Partially negative as I was waiting for sirens occasionally. He likes burnouts. He's always in race mode. He was getting the tire spinning and taking off with the front in the air at one point. lol
We raced numerous times. I beat him at first, and then he started getting me off the light most times. I out horsepower him and can roll past, but he didn't have to worry about wheelies off the line... and it didn't seem like he would have cared if it did wheelie. The 70 ran well, but it's not keeping up with an RC-One. The guy on the stock Jog kept getting left behind.
I normally just go lap after lap till I leave. Those guys spend a lot of time stopped. We went to Wawa first, which is where the biggest crowds gather in OC these days. Cars pull up to gas pumps and park. The whole lot is filled with cars and people all the way around, filling the CVS lot beside it and the 7-11 and strip malls around those. They met up with 2 other guys eating outside at a Chinese restaurant behind there so I sat down at the table and after introductions the convos were mostly Spanish for a bit but everyone was nice enough.
Went to 7-11 from there and stood around for a bit. I really don't know why cars go there, aside from a desire to show off. Once a car gets in, it's damn near trapped. Even the very loud cars would rev and still had to yell at people to get out of the way so they could move. When I left on the scoot I was revving and people weren't even paying attention with me right behind them trying to get to an exit.
Rode more, with brief stops. It was fun. Those guys do cut in and out of traffic in ways I'm not a fan of at times. It's like everything is a last minute decision, where I'm much more planned. For example, it seemed they just decided to cut across 3 lanes of traffic to turn around suddenly. I was at the tail end and cut off 2 cars to do it. I prefer to chill a bit more with that stuff. I'll be dumb, but I wanna come home in one piece so I can go a few more streets if need be to get over with plenty of room.
Unfortunately, I used most of my batteries before meeting those guys. I had some, but it was harder to keep them changed because if I wasn't ready they were outta there and I'm wearing full gear and they've just got helmets so they're ready quick. Naturally the helmet cam died just before one of the biggest burnouts from the orange scoot and a car stopped and did one as well. Then I missed a turbo mustang with a fender exit exhaust 2-stepping by us as those guys egged him out. It was shooting flames at least 2 feet out of the side and sounded like a large gun every time. I should still have plenty of footage to share though.
I wound up being in OC for about 12 hours. Rode over 140 miles around town.
