I have a 2011 buddy 50 that’s been rock solid. Changed tires. Tubes. New brake pads. Rollers etc.
I essentially take it down the street to the train and back up the hill in the Hudson valley. over this past summer there would be times where I’d temporarily lose speed. Odd. Wouldn’t go faster than 25-30 on a straight (used to 40+ on flat ground) and uphill is normally 20-25…now I’m suddenly getting 10-15. Feels like it’s not shifting. I checked rollers. That seems fine.
The belt seems ok, but I’m ignorant as how to confirm it’s ok.
I even taped around the exhaust to see if I had a hole in my exhaust pipe.
no idea. Maybe my cylinder is shot?
There’s an odd “whaaahwhaaaawhahhh” when I listen close. It’s why I checked the rollers. Maybe the drum brake is stuck?
no idea where to start and open to any and all suggestions!!!
thank you in advance!

1)measure the width of your belt brand new 18mm wide if she is at 16.5 ypu would replace 2) Since you have the case open take a permanent marker and make a sharpie mark from the inside of the variator to the outer edge Run down the road wide open and measure how much marker is left on the outer edge The stock variator is not the best and you should have around 4 to 5 mm left. this a ncy variator with a sharpie test it gets below 1 mm with stock belt and is a good upgrade for 35 bucks malossi is even better buts it closer to 90 bucks

It’s juuuust about or slightly under 17mm. And it’s loose/floppy. That’s the sound I was hearing for sure. Curious if the clutch itself is bad as well. Will take that apart next!

Perhaps the torque spring is not working correctly anymore. If it's lost some tension in the spring. It won't shift as well, especially up hills.

It was fairly difficult to pull to get the belt loose. No idea what the tension should be. Additionally, the nut on the clutch was stuck. Didn’t want to force anything until I learned more (watched more YouTube videos)
The belt is old as dirt. Might be 12 years old. I had it worked on maybe 6-8 years ago but no idea if they replaced the belt.
Would a 654-18-30 fit? Or is 651-18-30 the only belt that can fit the buddy 50.

Is this the nut you are saying is stuck I mark every nut with permanent before i take it off so that i can retighten it back to the same torque I use this tool for that nut and wrap the handle against a cement floor to get it loose other guys use a pipe wrench and wrap that against floor to loosen and snug back up

You dont need a longer belt the stock belt works great. You are getting pretty good travel for stock variator. So that says your getting close to top gear . If the belt is that old just get a new one . If you have a old contra it wont pull you back down in gear so going up hills and take off would suck . This tends to start out ok-ish first thing in the day and as you down the road it gets a notch worse for down shifting A fresh contra spring can really make a difference . I used the ncy brands to upgrade my transmission the ncy stuff works with stock transmission this is where I have got parts from ncystore.com/ncy-cvt-kit-139qmb?search=ncy%20cvtwww.scooterworks.com/Search?mmcategory=2%7CGenuine%2FBuddy%2050&pg=2

The nut is stuck to get the clutch off! I have a craftsman impact driver and tried for a good 1-2 minutes trying to get it off while holding the wheel to no effect.
I think I’m going to buy a belt and see what’s what.
