Hey scooter gurus, brought 'performance' carb from Amazon (#78 main jet), found it dies at half throttle and as revs build (suspect due to mixture way too rich!), dropped needle down as far as it will go to lean it out.... found only success by removing airbox and running pod filter. So much for "plug and play".
Anyone had similar experiences they'd like to share? Or advice? Cheers

Welcome! I can tell you that it's vey common for me to have the carb tune out of the box not work well at all. People prefer different methods. I generally like to start with the main jet and just getting it to idle. Then work on the needle and get the idle dialed in after. 1/2 throttle is likely either needle or needle clip setting or main jet. Marking the throttle can help, because it's often hard to estimate where you really are. www.49ccscoot.com/faq/carbtune.html

There is no such thing as "plug and play" when it comes to carbs and never will be. Amazon is not responsible for the accuracy of individual advertisers claims. As a general situation "Performance" carbs are usually sold with a matching pod filter and are intended for use with that pod filter and they may require some additional tuning. They are NOT supposedly 'plug and play' 'stock replacement' carbs set up for use with the 'stock' airbox. Due to differences in 'stock' airbox setups the "stock replacement" carbs usually require tuning to work properly. Unfortunately advertisers are rather dishonest when describing their products and bandy nonsense terms like 'performance', 'plug and play', 'stock replacement', or 'racing', around rather liberally in order to lure gullible buyers in. Caveat Emptor LOL
