Hello to all. Yes I am brand new to the board and yes I am in need of help! This is in regards to a 2004 Yamaha Zuma 50 that was purchased new nearly 20 years ago by my son who used it regularly thru middle school then high school then at college until he graduated in 2013. The scooter was working perfectly when it was "retired". It has literally sat in my heated garage for nearly 10 years without any use since then. I recently decided to get it back on the road in anticipation of selling it. My son took excellent care of the scooter and it sits with 9670 miles on the odometer. Much to my surprise as he knew better he left it with a gas tank 1/3 full and the oil tank about half full. I'm a fairly competent auto mechanic but this is a new animal to me. My son did print out a service manual years ago which has been of some help but not quite good enough for someone new to this vehicle. My first move as I started this "rebirth" was to remove the spark plug and much to my surprise the combustion chamber was full of the clean oil, and I mean FULL. Due to the old gas I replaced the fuel petcock and carb and all the fuel lines. Of course, new air filter, new battery, and rinsed out the fuel tank. Fortunately I dodged a bigger problem as the fuel tank was without corrosion.
So having listed what I have done my remaining hesitation concerns the oil issue. Is this simply a very slow collection due to 10 years of poorly planned storage or has the labelled oil autolube pump failed by just sitting and needs to be replaced? Also, any suggestions concerning the combustion chamber that was full of oil? Does it need a rinsing with fuel or just empty out the excess oil and start it up?
Any help and advice is welcomed. Merry Christmas to all.
