So I just bought a prebug Zuma and in stripping it down and taking the engine apart when I got to the cvt it was just horrible shape. Rust everywhere and looks like previous owner never opened it to clean out all the belt dust either. Starter clutch and idler gear were rusted and siezed. I literally had to pry them out.
So my problem is….I see you can buy the starter clutch fairly easy. But there appears to be an inner race (steel ring) pressed over a boss cast into the case. This race/ring is completely rusted so bad I don’t think it’ll ever clean up and be usuable. I haven’t gotten the engine to the shop to clean it in my parts washer and wire wheel off the surface rust but this race is visibly pitted.
Question, is that race a replaceable part anyone sells and is it just lightly pressed over the end of the boss around crank? If so, who sells it? I spent about 20 minutes casually looking for it online but between getting sidetracked (sidelinked 🤪) I didn’t find it near anyone selling the clutch. Maybe make one on the lathe outta tool steel and do the torch harden and oven temper back to straw color??? I would think it would need to be hard to survive rollers spinning around it, but maybe not since you’re not gonna sit on the starter button but for a few seconds at a time???
Guess I should maybe start a build thread too, considering I don’t know alot about the 2t engines and could use some input on parts choices for the build!

If starter parts for the horizontal mina are the same as the vertical mina, here ya go. Maybe someone else here knows for sure? Partsforscooters.com

Thank you sir, even if it’s different it’s cheap enough to give it a try!
Have you ever had to change that race or know anything about how it’s pressed onto the aluminum boss/case (the press fit-up)??

Using a Dremel cutoff wheel cut a notch in the old one, screwdriver in the cut to snap it apart, should not matter if you nick the boss under it. Heat the new one a bit and it should slip right on, if not pound away with a block of wood between it and the hammer, but not hard enough to break cases.

I'll add to the above, if the cases are split for crank work, that ring can easily be tapped out from the inside. Also all of that e-start stuff can be removed as kick starting a 2 stroke is easy..
