Just did rebuild and tried using new belt, but new belt is shorter, 1/4 inch. How much does belt length play in using all of drive face surface. New belt was wider by .080 too. Put old belt on and seemed to get more travel, but it has 1000 hard miles.

If the belt is too short it can't get full travel on the variator. And your top speed will be down. When you say it's quarter of an inch, how did you measure it? Put a mark on the belt and roll it on a flat surface to get the length? If it's very short you should be able to see the difference in the rear pulley position. Even if used hard, 1000 miles is very little use unless you are making big power. Yamaha recommends changing my belt at 6,000 miles. And even at 7,000 it wasn't excessively worn.

I stretched both belts between two rounds, one fixed and marked on table. That was my thought too, but product provider is quick to blame other variables. Still need to adjust other factors too, but if the belts not long enough it’s never going to reach where it needs to be.

The problem is different manufacturers measure the belt length differently. The whole thing is a minefield.
