Hello again, in a recent post I have made, I was asking how to fix a hesitation problem on my Zuma and just recently i got around to fixing it but ran into a new problem. After reinstalling the clutch and variator, it seems that when idling, something is loose in the variator side because it makes a clacking noise but stops once accelerated, anyone know what it could be? i was thinking maybe one of the parts is loose so i took it off and retightened the variator and the rollers but same thing. If a video helps, I'll try and get one asap.

Yeah a video would be good. Have you started it with the cover off? The belt might be catching the variator momentarily and it’s the weights shifting you hear.

Your belt is probably slapping and then when you rev it up the variator snugs up against the belt and it stops making noise
Run it without the cover and watch the belt as you idle and then rev it up
A video would be great

Assuming the weights are the correct dimensions and the starter drive is fine, I'm guessing the clacking is a dynamic involving your idle speed and the weights. With the engine warm, does the back wheel turn slowly when idling on the center stand?

With the engine warm, does the back wheel turn slowly when idling on the center stand? i can't check that because the previous owner swapped the center stand for a kickstand, the weights are stock, could it just be the idle speed as you said? or something else?

I would pull the variator assembly off first and make sure the guide bushings on the ramp plate are intact and that there are no obvious issues. Then I would take the starter clutch off and check that over. I'm leaning toward a starter clutch problem because that's a really harsh noise that's not typical for a variator issue and it's struggling to turn over.

My apologies I somehow missed your post with the videos. I agree with 90GTVert that noise is quite consistent I would lean towards one or more of the dogs on the starter clutch out of position especially since it's not cranking correctly. It could have pulled apart when you removed the variator originally.

I took it apart, cleaned it up and put it all back. It worked for a little bit but went back to the same noise after a small ride around my neighborhood. It makes the same noises, the clacking and the turnover so I'm lost once again.

Sounds like you found the problem though. One of the dogs must be sticking. I'd reassess. Maybe you can find another clutch on Ebay. Otherwise you might be down to using a spacer and kickstart.

Little update not sure if you got your problem solved but I just noticed Scooter Swap Shop has an OEM starter clutch available for your Zuma for $26.
