Peugeot Speedfight 3 - Never Ending Pain

Hello! Greeting from Latvia! Im Adrians, here to share my story so far with my second moped/scooter.

So, as I mentioned, it's a 2013 Peugot Speedfight 3 "Darkside". Fully stock with original documents, air cooled and with rear drum brakes. Saw a listing in Germany, fell in love and brought it back to Latvia on November 4th, 2022  - paid 650e for it:

Some of you are wondering - why so cheap? That's easy - it didn't run, front forks are seized, battery is dead, seat is slowly ripping, it isn't showing how much gas is in the tank, etc (the next cheapest model was for 1100e soo i got a pretty good but still very bad deal xD).

Got straight to it, trying to start it for a week straight - didnt work (well, only on brake cleaner). Then winter came, and sold my Zip so I could finance the Speedfight. During winter I took it apart mostly, and discovered water in the gas tank. So I cleaned it out, cleaned the carb, but it still ran like crap. So I took it to my friends workshop where he took off the cylinder, and inside was an almost brand new Airsal Sport 50cc   So he cleaned the engine, put new gaskets, and it fired right up! For the first upgrades I bought an LED rear taillight (the old taillight was working, it just had a cracked lens), new STR8 filter since the old airbox fell apart on it's way to Latvia, some gas lines and a new spark plug:

  
Didn't ride it so much 'cuz I hadn't registered it, but in March got the plate and began the start of the season!

 
A bit later got new left hand switches, new battery and a carb repair kit:


Put on close to 500km before some real engine troubles - the head threads where the spark plug screws in were somehow cross-threaded, and the spark plug basically flew out while going 50-60kmh xDD. So yeah, order a new head, new plug, new gaskets, BUT mysteriously, when warmed up, stayed at 5-6k rpm's and didn't go faster than 20kmh, which didn't happen before. So I took it to a mechanic, he overhauled the entire thing - new small end bearing, new crank bearings, again new gaskets. Payed 150e (160$) for the service, but still, DIDN'T FIX THE ISSUE! After about 2 weeks of troubleshooting, it was a clogged stock exhaust (im just stupid like that).


When I finally fixed it (just removed the little silencer and rode it like that, there was no packing in the silencer so it didn't get louder), started a small project on it, which has only been done on 2-3 scooters in LV -

Hello again, was at a jazz concert and got home at night, but heres the PT.2!

Didn't mention in the first part, but after i got tired of the low power, i got a Polini Speed Control variator, a used Leovince TT exhaust (from a piaggio motor, but the cylinder holes and mounting bracket somehow fit) and Dell'Orto 17,5mm PHVA carb. Top speed was 75kmh if i remember correctly, but it was plently for city and long commutes to the nearby lake.

About the project -



Unfortunately didn't get many "behind the scenes" photos of how i assembled it, and how i did the wiring, but:


Yesss, it's built-in speakers! It all started as a joke, friends telling me "c'mon, put some speakers and LED lights, make it a proper milf mobile xD", but after some time, I realised it wasn't that hard. So, the whole assembly is from wood I cut out from an old ramp, speakers are from 2000's idk really, wires I used are from old scooter harnesses, receiver was from AliExpress for like 12e and a second battery for 15e. Took me 4 days to make, hardest was making a template to cut out the perfect shape of wood to put in the seat are, since Speedfights have wonky dimensions. They were sounding nice, with both batteries on full volume I could listen up to an hour, but the good thing was it recharged automatically since it was connected to the original wiring. Only con was I couldn't listen to it while driving since the exhaust was so loud 

Next were some LED underglow, too easy to install and made it look like something from "Pimp My Ride" xDD

and did some sewing, since it was ripping by the strand eveyday (no money for a new seat cover)

Then went to a scooter meet, not many photos but the exhaust did its thing :


Took it to more baths, resprayed with bumber spray the "interior", bought a Stage6 "Carbon Look" riser and polished the headlights:

   

Rode like that for some weeks, hen realised the Speedfight wasn't all to my liking, since my passion was to do wheelies, and this thing weigh's close to 110kg (242lbs) stock (wanted to go 70cc but still, the gas tank originally is beneath the feet so wheelies would still be very hard, and drum brakes ), so I tried to sell it, but....

 

   
  

That was a fun experience haha, but wouldn't recommend even to my enemies (no sound because of the language and a bit screaming). Also broke the visor and bumped my nose against the helmet's chin. Hello again! Been a while - was busy with school work and jobs from time to time.

Anyway, we left off at me crashing the Speedfight. After about 2 to 3 weeks of healing myself from the injuries and shame   I started to order some parts so I could start riding ASAP. First on the list, and at a very good price scored myself a Stage6 Sport Pro clutch and a used fork:

 

Although it still hurt to use my hands, I managed to tear the SF down and pushed it to my friends' garage, where I disassembled the front end and replaced the fork, and put on the clutch with some stiffer Polini Green(medium) clutch springs:

  
  


Since I sold the Leovince pipe (because restoring wasn't worth the effort and money on my part) I put on the stock exhaust after cleaning the insides of it and rode like that for a week:


While I bought the clutch, I also ordered a new headlight bulb (bought 2 but the supplier said that they forgot to put the other one in the package and I just refunded the lost one since waiting wasn't also an option> ), a Malossi X-Special drive belt, a new intake manifold and a used Motoforce 21mm PHBG carb:

 
Unfortunately (and didn't get it on camera) the crank bearings where, again, shot and rattling   but it still ran just fine so I ignored it for a while xD. In the mean time put on the rest of the plastics and rode like this:

Out with the Airsal Sport 50cc, and in with the new Top Performances Black Throphy 70cc Cast Iron kit!

yes, there is something rattling in the engine (these stupid SF's have a 12x16x16mm small end bearing, and I ordered a Polini 12x15x15mmx_x )


Still with the original exhaust because I was waiting for a better one (also ordered completely new). In the meantime I put an additional LED bar on the front fairings for some night forest runs, and upgraded the intake as well - Stage6 Viton Short + Straight manifold and an Athena filter:

Don't remember much about the CVT and carb setup, but the main jet was 90-95 something, 5G 16x13mm rollers, a Malossi Green torque spring and the Polini Green clutch springs. This is August 29th, and nothing really changed, just periodically switched from the straight intake to the original one so I could fit the mud guard. Some photos up to the end of November:

                  

In the season I rode roughly 1200km (745miles) on the TPR cylinder, changed the ignition once since it decided to die randomly, never really had issues that would prevent me from riding and was all round a very good tuned and reliable mode of transportation!
In December I finally rode it to the garage and started slowly tearing it apart for a "complete" overhaul:

    

During winter I worked some random jobs here and there, and in January finally got some money left over to spend on it. I traded the Motoforce carb and Athena filter for a Dell'Orto 21mm PHBG carb with some parts missing and a Malossi E13 air filter. Sold the S6 straight intake and bought a Polini (since the ID was a bit larger so it could let more air in). Sandblasted the cases and overhauled the gearbox, new motor bushings:

  
 

New subframe rubbers and tidied the engine wiring harness:

 

Painted some plastics, got the front end done, and then started waiting for the engine components:

  

Overhauled the engine - used stock crank, new cylinder gaskets and new spark plug, new spark plug cap, new crank bearings and oil seals, new front pulley and other bits, new carb parts (slide, spring, spring seat, needle and clip, choke and choke cable, etc.):

       

Tried to start it, but couldn't get any spark. Redid all my wiring, new watertight plugs, still - no spark. Later realised when I put on the flywheel, I accidentally left a small hex key between the flywheel and the stator, ripping the strands from the stator, ruining my brand new stator. So I bought that new (3rd one i've gone through on this SF xD) and it somewhat fired up:

 
overrevving very much, these 70cc cast irons don't like 4.7g rollers haha (10.5-11k rpm's)


This was 14th of March, and still going strong! Only changed the roller weights to 5.7g I think, but still, going 80km/h it's revving to 10k rpm's which is a bit too much, want to keep it at 8.8k rpm's max. And changed the torque spring to a S6 Strong.

In April finally got the courage to rattlecan the plastics to Glossy Black:



Also I wanted to try and adapt a Piaggio Malossi Selettra ignition to it, since the backplate holes pretty much lined right up, but in the end I agve up since I didn't have the proper tools to align in the center, and all the way tightened it rubber against the stator:



Got some LED underglows again:

Just ordered some new parts - new small end bearing (this one rattles like a b!#%& and I just hope it won't explode anytime soon), smaller pilot jet (50 pilot is just too big, idle screw all the way in and it barely keeps rpm's at idle, ordered a 40), new carb gaskets, new spark plug and an exhaust gasket. I have a friend who will trade me his Polini CP 19mm carb, since I like them way better, and 21mm is not neccessary right now (82 main jet, yes it's economical but CP's are more fun ) ). Still can pull wheelies, max speed about 92km/h (57mph), clutch is starting to slip so that's the next on the list. Will update you when the parts arrive!!

I did fancy a speedfight, but the parts supply here was terrible.
