I'm picking up a 50cc Chinese shortcase 2t out of an ATV for dirt cheap.
I want to build this thing up all gnarly and then swap it into my vino. 100% will be doing a build thread for it. I'm thinking the works, nice crank, big carb, water-cooled and all.
My concern is getting the right parts. Ive been doing a little reading and from what I understand two of the biggest differences were the 12mm wrist pin and the different diameter for the crank where the variator slides on. I might be mistaken but I'm pretty sure that was it.
What I'm trying to get with this post is pointed in the right direction of how I would go about checking everything. Like what all do I need to measure our and look for? Everything? Only this? Will I need to machine anything? I know there's probably some basic stuff I already know to check like crank specs and wrist pin diameter etc but I just don't want to miss anything.
I've never dove into a scooter engine like this. I've done lots of other work on them but never done a full rebuild from the ground up. I did take a part a 50cc 4 stroke once and put it back together, crank and all, but there was no torque specs or anything outside of just taking it apart to see what is inside and then putting it back together. It was a junk engine I took home from work to learn on.
Anyways, I figured a cheap Chinese one wouldn't be a bad place to start. I had really wanted a 90cc out of a Polaris but this will work I think.
I did do some reading on swapping the quad engine as far as the mounts and then also there was some work with the gearbox, and also swapping the drum brakes over but I think it's all stuff I can handle. The biggest hurdle is probably the wheel axle. I saw a bit where someone said something about having an issue there in short cases but I'm confident something can be figured out. I don't have a machine shop or personally have access to one but there are a few here in town that I think would help me if I needed work done to fit a good cylinder.
I also want to figure out a 12" wheel set up and disc brakes on the back. I need to get a caliper ordered for the front still, speaking of brake swaps.
If anyone has any advice or things I should be concerned about I'm not thinking of, I'm all ears. I really want this to go well, and fully understand it's probably going to be a long process as there will be lots of parts to go through. There will undoubtedly be hurdles and things working against me possibly but I think at least getting it together separately on a bench and taking my time before I put it in I should be able to make it work.
