I thought I should share this. Make sure to always check when installing the spacer and gasket between the intake and head. I didn't realize that you need to check the orientation of your spacer. A few weeks ago while I was rejetting my carb I also put a new gasket under my spacer because I forgot it when I assembled the motor. Since then I was having a tough time tuning. Even with an 80 it was running rich. My fuel mileage was terrible also. I went as far as ordering a new carb to try and get it right.
Today I was testing out the new carb setup to make sure it would fit. I pulled off my intake and looked at the spacer and I could see it was not lined up with the intake port correctly at all. I needed to rotate it 180 degrees for it to line up correctly. Something I didn't catch when I installed it last time.
The difference when I took it for a ride was major. After a mile I knew I had to go with a much larger jet. I was running an 80 at the time and jumped right to an 88. Much better, but it wants bigger.
So yeah, those spacers need to be installed correctly. Install them the wrong way and you'll get terrible mpg and a bunch of other weird issues.
