Hi folks, just wanna introduce myself as a fellow scooter enthusiast out in Boston. I'm glad I stumbled on this forum, you guys have so much useful information!
A couple years ago an older friend of mine handed down a 2007 Kymco agility 50 to me; it's a little beat up but runs nicely. He took good care of it but I'm not as handy as he is -- all I've done is to pump the tires, replace broken bulbs, fix a loose electrical connection, and change the engine oil. I don't know much about scooter repair and maintenance but I'm willing to learn. Earlier this month the starter broke and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with it. The engine runs fine after I kick start it, and I checked the battery and it's fine. I'm still working my way through the rest of the "no start" checklist on the forum and I'll post again if I'm having trouble.

Welcome to the forum! There is a whole technical help section for 2T and 4T (2 and 4 stroke) scooters below. Fix the electric start fast, -the kickstart is only for emergency use. Prolonged use will crack the CVT cover. You may also have an interlock switch out. You do know that you must put the brake light ON in order to activate the electric start? I ran into a young girl once that was having difficulties with her new scooter that did not know that.

Hi FrankenMech -- thank you, this is really good to know, I've got lots of reading and learning to do here. I'll be sure to check the switches and wiring. And yes, I do have the brake lights on when I press the electric start. Actually when I press it I don't hear anything and I don't see any drop in the battery voltage so maybe it's a wiring issue. I will keep investigating...

Welcome to a great forum. You might try opening up the housing at the start switch. There’s contacts that get dirty, it might be simple. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi guys, I figured it out! One of the terminals on the starter motor was super dirty, I wiped it down and sanded it a little and the scooter starts fine now. I was actually pretty surprised by how grimy it gets down there, as it's my first time opening it up. Is there anything else that would be good to look at while I have the cover off still? It did take me a while taking the thing apart since it was my first time and I had to find where all the screws and bolts were. Next time I imagine it'll be easier for me.

Check the engine ground connections.

Looks grounded, my multimeter reads zero resistance between the negative terminal of the battery and the metal casing of the engine, if that's what you mean by engine grounding. Thanks for the pointers.

A meter only shows what is happening at very low current. Look for voltage drops when the starter is running and the engine is running. That dirty terminal is a prime example. It may have read low ohms but the voltage drop went high when the starter system was engaged.
