I was about to post something I've never heard before last night and figured, why not start a thread for all of us to share. I know some of us have heard plenty of unusual ideas regarding scooters and tuning. Could be entertaining.
So, last night a guy told me that he was going to adjust his compression ratio by ear. He had a stroker engine that I advised him had a combustion chamber that's too small for it. I checked the cc with a burette, but told him you can do it with just a cheap syringe from a pharmacy. Told him what cc I'd aim for. He went home and cut it with a rotary tool or something and rounded it out and lost the squish band. Never checked cc, but it runs.
He says it doesn't sound and feel like it used to, so he's going to get another head and cut it till it sounds right. I'm like, "Dude... just check cc like I showed you". He says he doesn't need to. He knows how it should sound. I said, "Uhh, you said it overheated all of the time before. If you did manage to dial it in by ear, then you're making it sound like you think it did when it probably had too much compression and overheated." He says no, this is his way. I gave up and said OK.
Really wish the guy would listen to me and maybe we'd get him an engine that doesn't overheat and seize. He trusts me with this stuff, but he doesn't seem to believe when I stress the importance of checking things like a leak test or cc of a head.
So what ideas have you heard that left you a bit stunned? (Please don't just post all of the dumb stuff you've probably heard me say. LOL)

Scooters attract women to you. ( Never worked for me) I always attract the wrong women with scooters. My dog on the other hand is quite the magnet.

Buy a scooter. It will be cheap transport! Yeah that's why I've stuck about a thousand pounds into the white Aerox.

In North Carolina, most people think the reason you ride a 50cc scooter is because you’ve lost your driver’s license. Another misconception is, you don’t need tags or insurance for 50cc scooters.
FACT: Legally, you need a driver’s license, tags and insurance. Motorcycle license for anything over 50cc. Oddly, a Title is not required to sell or buy. Bill of sale will do.

When I first started riding my Pink scoot all of my coworkers thought I got a DUI.

My favorite is, put an open exhaust and intake on a 4t and it will hit 50mph. Then add the orange CDI and coil for another 10mph. I have heard this frequently on a Facebook group.

The more stock the "49cc" scoot is or appears to be, the more I heard that and questions about gas mileage. With a heavily modified two-stroke and doing power hops all over the place, people tend to switch to "what is that?" and "how fast does it go?". It is fun when people think they hear you wrong if you have a fast scoot. A guy asked how fast it is a couple of months ago and I said about 85. He said 65? I just nodded in agreement. lol My favorite is, put an open exhaust and intake on a 4t and it will hit 50mph. Then add the orange CDI and coil for another 10mph. I have heard this frequently on a Facebook group. Possibly time to leave that group.

What about a 15hp 6 speed aprilia RS? They can do 80 mph on a good day. Thats okay to ride around on without a licence or insurance? I guess you don't need to wear a helmet either?

It's gonna vary by state. In MD the Aprilia would have to be a motorcycle tag (so you need a motorcycle license). Here it can't be over 50cc, but also not over ~3HP and you aren't allowed to ride faster than 30MPH for mopeds/motor scooters and it has to be an automatic transmission. On the flip side, some highways won't allow you on them because you don't have enough cc.

I think the RS is a motorcycle, or should be considered one, with a 6 speed manual and more importantly no step through. I understand you mentioning it as I've seen it considered a scooter several times. I'd definitely own one if I come across a good example. I'm going on 8 years of ownership of a 2016 Tuono Factory so Aprilia is a ok with me. By the way in Missouri there is no helmet law, but as I recall when there was one, it didn't apply to 49cc scooters

I once had this idea, looking for some ridiculous loophole. Some of you might know this vid form Colin Furze: Looked into Dutch law regarding mobility scooters and what limitations they have. Unfortunately they are meant for sidewalk use only, therefore a speed limit of 3 mph or something applies and they don't need a registration with the Dutch version of the DMV (which is called RDW). These days so called fatbikes are really a thing here. It's officially a bicycle but they have suspension, big tires, a powerful motor. And you don't need any form of license, registration, insurance, helmet or whatsoever. Because it's a bicycle. They can do up to 40mph. I think they're pretty rad.

Though you see plenty of people riding illegal cycles. The law says you must use pedals and the electric motor can only assist you. And then only to 15.5mph. They were supposed to legalise the little battery scooters, but keep extending the trial. The legal ones are much slower than all the illegal ones I see.

Think I have heard everything about scooter over the years 😆
Favs have to be:
2 stroke are so simple to make fast
You just need a bigger pipe
Put the racing cdi on it, it made mine so fast
Qmb have weak cranks and can't handle bbk, still have never even seen a qmb with a bad crank.
You have to use ethanol free gasoline or it will never run right
Use the biggest pilot jet you can so you when the bike starts it doesn't lean out and wreck your cylinder
You sound like you are running lean adjust your valves back to stock or you will wreck your valves.
Your flow through exhaust needs more back pressure and that will make you faster.
Your have to use a performance coil like the glixal high performance coil from scooter parts .com and then you can run a bbk safely
Lighter variator weights will always make your bike faster
The list goes on and on 😆
