got my 1984 aero 50 running ... starts easily with kickstarter but i would like to get the starter motor working ... it TRIES to turn the engine but can barely move it. i found a service manual for a 1985 which makes starter removal sound like a walk in the park but on this '84 it looks like i have to remove, at the very least, the exhaust and the oil pump. am i correct ? when i do get it out, do these motors usually respond well to a cleaning and brush replacement ? if it doesn't, am i correct in thinking that only '83 and '84 motors work ?
thanks joe

check oem honda powersports for compatible cross reference parts. if its anything like my honda elite, you just need to remove 2 bolts to remove the starter. teh exhaust shouldn't have to come off to get the starter out. sounds like a low battery to me. toss a pair of jumper cables on it and see if it turns.

thanks for the reply, kosmos. not too worried about cross-referencing parts just yet ... i need to know how to get that starter out. no room anywhere to take it out once the 2 bolts are removed, that's why i think i need to remove the exhaust and oil pump. hoping someone will chime in who has done it. no chance it's the battery ... jump starting it with a known good car battery AND known good cables.

you can try. if it gets in the way, remove them. dont allow an exhaust leak to stay if it develops one after you remove it tho, with those donut gaskets, they can leak when squished a 2nd time. the starter doesn't need to come out much it can turn and be snaked out of there, just try it. theres nothing that goes in that hole its bolted to but a small gear. have never rebuilt one of those. dont remove your oil lines if you go messing with the oil pump, if you do, you'll have to bleed them out. and if you do id also add about an ounce of oil to the full tank so you dont run dry on it for the first tank

update on this for future generations of aero 50 owners ...
i could see absolutely no way to remove that starter; there was just no space to work it out of the scooter, so i decided the thing to do would be to remove the engine, not that big a deal once i read up on how to do it.
got down to the last couple of steps, removed the lower shock mount bolt and the whole engine, cvt and rear wheel magically dropped and opened a space large enough for the starter to come out. i didn't really have to do most of the steps involved in engine removal ... all that is required is to remove the exhaust, remove the lower shock mount bolt and just watch that no cables, tubes, hoses, or wires, are getting stressed.
the bad news is that the starter is cooked inside. oh well, at least i know how to easily do the re & re when i find a good used starter. meanwhile this lovely little machine starts easily on the first kick. just waiting for the paperwork to come through on it.
