I'm having trouble understanding how to use the parts included in this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B3FZDJZSo it looks like the gasket and ring BOTH go on. It's hard to tell which order they go on, though. If I'm not mistaken, the exhaust opening is usually designed to accommodate the ring, so the gasket would go on the engine side? Also, is it possible to use the gasket without the ring or vice versa?

you use the football shaped one for the flat exhaust flange. Like this pipe. The ring one goes into a groove in the exhaust flange. If it doesn't have the groove. Use a flat football shaped one. They often supply both types when you buy exhausts or cylinders. But you only use one.

aeroxbud Gotcha. If the groove is there, is it still okay to use just the football shaped one?

You shouldn't need to. It will just be more likely to leak where they join.

aeroxbud I posted the other day with a picture of what happened to my old ring, and I'm worried I'll have to use the gasket by itself if it happens again. But the rings are cheap, so I'll just have to get another as backup rather than use the gasket that came with the kit.

You most likely didn't have the ring seated into the groove correctly. The ring ones are not designed to be squashed totally flat. You might have to dig out the old gasket from the pipe to get it seated correctly. It should sit down in the groove with a little protruding.
