A funny thing happened when asking about a Honda Helix on FB marketplace.... I bought a 1983 Honda Lead (non US market) Scooter. It is effectively a 1983 Honda Aero 50cc based on the AB07 engine. I picked up the scooter on Saturday and spent a bunch of time tearing it further down to get an idea of the mechanical condition of the scooter... Here is the good and the bad.
Good: It was cheap, not free, but cheap.
Good: It looks to have the majority of parts there.
Good: engine has decent compression, the piston and the cylinder look decent. I measured 40mm bore x 39.1 or 39.3 stoke ( this told me I was AB07, most likely.)
Good: It looks to have a NH80 exhaust on it ( Upgrade?)
Worst(so far): The variator and the clutch are pitted on the belt faces. So I have to figure out used replacements, or new alternatives for both the variator, drive face and the clutch belt faces... the clutch is frozen of the shaft, gonna have to use a puller to get it off... there was about a cup of dirt and debris that came out of the belt housing... it was pretty crusty up in there.
Bad: I cleaned the carb, the float bowl has a broken overflow tube (so I'm gonna have to find that) and the float is broken, so need a new one of those.
Bad: Tank needs a good flush and maybe evaporust soak, not sure until I empty the tank and look around.
Bad: I am not seeing lots of "on the shelf stuff" for this engine, so I am not sure the best path forward... ( I have been reading some of the big bore PGO threads, though I do not want to start by splitting cases, was hoping for a well laid upgrade path. I want it to run and ride under its own power without breaking the bank.
Any ideas on the Clutch faces and the Variator Drive face replacements???
Thanks,
Chris - I do have pics of the crustiness if anyone is interested.
