Hello! I just got a 49cc Tao Tao. I got it for cheap because it’s not running.
I got everything going except for it leaks gas out of the air intake on the carb. Now I know what you are thinking, it’s a stick float or the float needs adjusted. Well you are probably right but I’ve tinkered with it a lot and it still leaks. Last night I got it to run for a long time without leaking but now it’s back to leaking. I just need to help from someone who knows more about mopeds or carburetors than me. Also when I had it running it would bog at not even a 1/4 throttle. Had to throttle up very slow to get it going faster. Thanks!

Fuel from the air cleaner or carb intake means you have a severe fuel leak, likely past the needle valve operated by the float. Drop the float bowl and the float. Inspect the angled surface of the needle. Look for damage or a groove worn into the tip. If damaged, either get a new carb or a new needle. If ok, get a q-tip and some Comet/cleaner. Wet the tip and get some cleanser on the cotton. Use the q-tip as a buffer to clean the metal of the seat whee the needle makes contact. Flush ALL cleanser. PBT and see if it will seal. You can check by inverting the carb, float bowl off, and blowing into the fuel inlet. You should NOT be able to push any air past the needle valve. If you can, the needle valve will leak fuel....... tom

If you have a vacuum operated petcock make sure there is no gas in the vacuum line which would indicate a ruptured diaphragm.
