Any of you folks ever run AFT in your transmissions? I'm going to give it a try.
I'm going to drain the Trans, epoxy a magnet in the sump, fill it with ATF, and run it for several months. If it lasts that long. After said period, I'll yang the Trans door and see what the condition of the gears looks like. I think it will work just fine. Any thoughts?

with the lighter oil you should make your service interval smaller
my thoughts are it would be like running atf in an old rock crusher not a goodf idea as the clearances are not as good as the new trans

Yamaha specs 30w motor oil for the rear hub gears on a Zuma I worked on and my 89 Ranger p/u w/5 sp. Mazda trans uses atf. Gotta make considerably less drag than 80/90 gear oil.

Other than viscosity differences, the main thing I read is that gear oil contains extreme pressure and anti-wear additives, and ATF usually just has anti-wear. At that rate though, plenty of people use motor oil and I don't think it has EP additives usually either. I dunno, I'm sure no oil expert, but I'd try it. www.engineersedge.com/lubrication/extreme_pressure_additives.htm

I did not follow this recommendation and replaced the tranny oil with Amsoil synthetic gear lube anyway since I had some. www.provoscooter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4297

the 2002 service manual calls for 10/30 gl in the 2005 revsion they changed it to 10/30 gl or se in 2008 it went to 85/140 hypod
so here is the question to ask yourself why is it the last year of the zuma before its re intorduction is the only year that they added se to the service manual and then when they bring it back they go to a hypod gear oil
even the manuals i have for euro versions from yamaha spec the 10/30 gl

good idea! Hope it works well.
I got mixed up on the year of my 5-speed in my 83GT Stang. Long story short, it called for gear oil and i put ATF in it by mistake (some do call for). It lasted about a 1,000 miles before it started "binding up". The sincro,s for 2nd and 3rd went shortly after a hard few passes. Still drove it for 6 months. And lets just say my "feel" for shifts got honed right in running without sincro,s anymore. Ended up busting one of the selector forks and it got stuck in 3rd. My fault tho. The shifter locknut backed off letting the shifter get outta whack. Then everytime i hit 3rd i was pushing the fork WAY too hard into that gear (toploader) adjust your shortthrow! lol

Bad stuff there 2Stroked. Sounds like my luck. I think they changed the composition of the syncronisers that allowed the use of ATF. I'll chronicle it with photos when I start next week. I hope you and your folks are well and I hope to see you this Spring in Ind.
