i recently opened up the top-end of my Derbi and discovered that a previous owner put in a 80cc airsal racing kit and that it had been damaged. what i think had happened was the piston came defected and a little piece came lose from where the little pin is that holds the ring. leaving me with a little scoring in the nikasil coating, it is barely noticeable with my fingernail. the piston is toast imo and im willing to order a new one if i can repair the cylinder
so i began looking into hoaning the cylinder and there seems to be mixed opinions on weather or not you should hoan nikasil coatings. According to this forum post, i should use wd40 and scotch brite/3M pad and follow the cross hatch marks. Using a scuffing pad seems like a good option and i wouldn't be worried to chip the coating, but i am worried that this would create an uneven surface.

You can't hone nikasil. It needs to be coated again. But you can clean it up with a scotch brite pad and a thin oil. If you try and none It, it can chip very easily as it's so hard.
