Hi everyone!
Long time lurker deciding to make a build thread finally!
I picked up this '94 Jog 3KJ / CY50 Sep '23 completely stock and have been loving every moment of it since! It came with just over 4000mi and I doubt any maintenance was ever done to it because the suspension was blown, jets were dirty and overall ran meh for a little while. This is my first scooter and first 2 stroke bike. Everything I'll do on this will be my first time.
Shortly after, I got some goodies:
- Yasuni R
- Exhaust studs
- Malossi Multivar
- S23 yellow contra
- Prima tuning rollers
- Malossi X-Special belt
- Yasusu 245 shock
- 85 main jet
- Trailtech tach
- Trailtech temp
- JDM headset with new plastics
- JDM clear lenses
- JDM taillight
- Bridgestone Hoop 80-90/10 front tire
This kept me content for a little while. I started to learn about how rollers and the variator play a role with a contra. I ended up with somewhere around 36 grams maxing out at 49mph and it staying relatively cool in the low 300s. I removed the rear tray mainly because I broke one of the studs...
I really wanted to get the scooter to be able to cruise at 60mph. I live in a relatively suburban area outside of Chicago but being able to confidentially take longer rides on roads with a speed limit of 45mph was the main goal. Plus, fast is fun! Black Friday came around and I discovered ScooterTuning.ca. More bits were acquired! I also wanted some backlit gauges so I wired in a LED that shines down on the temp and tach. I think it came out pretty neat! I was also kinda sick of looking at all the mismatched plastics so I painted them black and wrapped some other pieces white
- Top Performance Black Trophy 70cc 10mm
- Malossi fixed half
- Stage6 Torque Control MKII clutch
- Stage6 WingCooler clutch bell
- Malossi 15/41 primary gears
- Malossi spring seat
- Malossi piston bearing 10mm
- JDM wing
- JDM undercowl
A good friend and I went to Houston for NYE and brought the scooters with us! He's got a '88 Jog 27v. During that trip, I had a bag stolen out of our car that had the Jog keys. Quickly, I learned how to hotwire and drill through the locks to get into the cubby under the seat. Oopsie!
Afterwards, I began working on the engine build. Everything slapped together pretty easily. I accumulated some more parts. I deleted the oil injection system and used a Doppler block off plate, got a larger carb and then got analysis paralysis on how to route the intake. On longer riders, the Jog felt very sluggish and I suspected the clutch getting hot so I had a friend cut the case and another polish it. I tried making my own intake spacer, but I'm not sure I could feel the difference. I was using it while still on the stock carb. Has anyone noticed a spacer doing anything?
- Motoforce fan
- Top Performance VForce intake manifold
- Polini CP 19
- Stage6 PWK jets
- Bridgestone 3.5x10 rear tire ( massive )
An open element filter was soooo loud and it didnt really feel that fast. I got a larger carb thinking it would help me go faster but honestly the stock carb let me hit 60.3mph. I modified the stock airbox by removing the snorkel and then putting in small 1in filtered holes in the airbox. I added 3 or so holes total. I also got a Polini 360 intake but using it sucked and it puts the carb at a weird angle. If anyone wants it, lmk.
From there, I was always teetering around 54-59mph. I landed on a shim combo that gets the belt all the way on the outside of the rear pulley, its a Jog 90 larger one ( i forget the diameter ). I dremeled the slider pings in the torque driver to get a lil more opening. I got the wheels powedercoated white. Variator wise, I'm at 36g at this point, with 1.3mm of shims on the var boss and a .6mm shim between the boss and the rear ramp plate and a yellow contra. I may try out heavier rollers like 39g or heavier to see if i can get more speed. Outside of that, the Jog's been super reliable! I threw in a NGK BR8HS plug and some new brake shoes along with some shiny fan covers, kick levers and little doodads.
Oh! I also started playing with belt lengths. I first tried the Polini 800 belt which was decent on the take off. Then I tried out the Malossi Overraneg 815mm belt and have been using it since. I also cut out the grille out of the fan shroud to get more airflow in there. Made a pretty significant airflow increase. And I removed the springs out of the front forks to lower it up front.
Current setup:
- Top Performance Black Trophy 70cc 10mm
- Top Performance VForce reeds
- NGK BR8HS plug
- Polini CP19 ( 105 main, 40 pilot )
- Modified airbox
- Yasuni R
- Malossi Multivar ( 36g, 1.6mm spacers )
- Malossi fixed half
- Malossi Overrange belt
- Malossi 15/41 primary gears
- Stage6 Torque Control MKII clutch ( orange springs, pretty tight, all the weights )
- Stage6 WingCooler clutch bels
- S23 yellow contra
- Malossi spring seat
- Motoforce oversize fan
- premix 32:1 w/ Klotz
Runs max 320F, 9000rpm, 59-61mph, TD shifts at about 7400rpm
Next up, I'd like to do some chill porting changes but I've never done that before. I'm thinking of polishing the exhaust port and opening it up a lil bit. Advance the timing a lil bit seems interesting so we'll see how that goes. Heavier rollers also seem interesting. I'll redo the harness to delete the things I don't need and just see what needs updated wiring. I'm not really interested in higher RPMs and I really like my e-start but a Stage6 overrange var does seem tempting. Disc brakes would be killer and trying to find the right combo of parts for that
Anyway! That's me and thank you for making it down this far! Let me know if you have any suggestions or recommendations of things I can look at for some more speed. Cya soon!
