Hi,
I purchased a used Malaguti F15 a couple of months ago. Realizing it had low PSI I opened up the top end all looked good so I went about getting parts for a ring job. Here in the states it is not so easy to find everything for this engine. I have the correct gasket set but the rings I ordered were for a JOG 2T. They end up being too thick to fit in the groove. I searched for a month to find the thinner rings with no luck. My next option would be to buy a new piston set. Does the JOG piston match the bore for my Minarelli? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Malagutti F-15 huh? That's water cooled. Not sure on where to get the thinner rings, but I would suggest you go to harbor freight and pick up a 4 inch digital caliper so you can measure the piston and the bore diameter. Then you'll be armed with the measurements at least. This one: www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47256

The rings I bought for the JOG match the existing rings perfectly except for the thickness. Here is a link to a piston set for a JOG Minarelli. It is a 10mm like mine. The photo looks exactly like mine. www.swampcyclesmrpstore.com/SPD/b-mo0318--80000E83-1233178172.jspThe description says: PISTON SET 10MM WITH RINGS YAMAHA JOG 50CC 2T MINARELLI JOG Secondary: 15100B01F00B What does the word "secondary" refer to?

I see. I was thinking that perhaps the "secondary" was refering to the slightly larger piston for a slight bore out beyond the original size. OK so this piston should be the standard size to fit the original JOG Minarelli engine. So then the only question is are the pistons interchanegable with other forms of the Minarelli 2T.

That's a good question. I wish I had the answer.

My gut tells me the piston from a Jog will work since you said the ring diameter is the same.

I think most of the stock minarelli engines are pretty much the same layout, so it should work. There could be slight differences in maybe the piston pin location or the piston port or, as you have seen, the ring lands. I doubt you'll find any info from sellers to tell you if all those are exactly the same though. I think you will be OK with the replacement piston set.

If there's a Yahmaha dealer near you then you might try giving them a call or go down there with your piston and have them bring up the specs on a JOG piston and you can compare yours to that. Maybe they have a caliper. Maybe by some stroke of luck they have a JOG cylinder and piston in parts stock that you can look at. Talk to the mechanic and see if he has a caliper to measure your piston diameter.

I have read that in other places; that they are interchangeable. Seems the Chinese have directly copied the original Minarelli engine to a tee. But yeah I have seen all kinds of specs written about the same parts with different specs given. I know these specs should all match.

Probably less likely to find the parts there. I did call to a Yamaha dealer to ask about used parts earlier. Nothing.

Whenever I have shopped the web for parts the description almost always says something like: "piston kit for Minarelli/JOG" or: "head gasket Minarelli/Jog" So that tells me right there that they are the same bore but the piston for a water cooled version that you have may be different due to the water jacket.
I'm gonna stop by Pasadena Yamaha tomorrow and talk to 'em.
We'll get you going dude.

I believe there is a water cooled JOG as well. I have seen parts listed for it a number of times. apparently there is no difference in the piston set up of the air or the liquid cooled version of the JOG.

Okay so I called Pasadena Yamaha and the parts guy said that he didn't have the specs on a JOG piston. just part number but he told me to check out wiseco.com and I did. I entered Malaguti F-15 in the search fields and it came up with different parts. Check it out: www.wiseco.com/ProductSearch.aspx
