Periodic Checks And Maintenance Schedule
Performing periodic checks and maintenace is one of the key elements to having a reliable scooter. Neglecting your scooter can lead to poor performance, breakdowns, or even serious safety concerns. Sure it takes some time to check all of these things, but finding them early can save you walking, tow bills, replacement parts, or even medical bills if the right part fails. Check your scooter's owner's manual for a vehicle specific service schedule.
Pre-Ride Inspection
A pre-ride inspection should be done before every ride. Take a walk around your scooter and look for any obvious problems.
Tire Pressure & Condition
Check your tire pressure and look for cracks, wear, or objects embedded in your tires.
Brake Operation
Make sure your brakes are working and adjusted properly, aren't leaking any fluid, and that the cables are in good condition.
Steering Check
Make sure there is no excessive play in your handlebars or steering system.
Controls
Ensure that all switches are functioning properly. Make sure the throttle moves freely and returns when you release it.
Lighting
Check the operation of all turn signals, high and low beam headlights, tail light, brake light, and marker lights. Make sure are reflectors are intact.
Mirrors
Adjust your mirrors for best visibility andmake sure they are secure.
Fluids
Check engine oil and other fluid levels and look for leaks of any fluid before every ride.
Every 250 Miles Or 2 Weeks
(In Addition To Above)
Fasteners
Check for loose nuts, bolts, and screws. Add thread locker and tighten if necessary.
Battery
Check battery charge and fluid level.
Every 1,000 Miles Or 6 Months
(In Addition To Above)
Spark Plug
Check spark plug condition. Replace the plug or adjust the carburetor as needed. For two strokes, make sure there is evidence that the engine is being oiled properly.
Air Filter
Check the air filter element and clean and replace as necessary. This is especially important with open air filters and/or in dusty environments.
Idle
Check engine idle speed and adjust the carburetor's mixture and idle settings if necessary.
Cables
Check for proper operation of throttle and brake cables and adjust, lube, or replace if necessary.
Engine Oil
Change the engine oil in 4 stroke scooters. Some prefer 500 mile oil changes for small air-cooled scooters.
Every 2,500 Miles Or 1 Year
(In Addition To Above)
Transmission Oil
Replace teh final drive transmission oil (gear oil).
Fuel System
Check the condition of all fuel hoses and the fuel filter. Clean or replace if necessary.
Suspension
Check fork and shock condition and operation.
Brakes
Check brake fluid levels and look for excessive wear. Fill/replace if necessary.
Drive Belt
Check the CVT drive belt for cracks and wear. 1mm below the original width is usually the service limit. Replace if necessary.
Valve Clearance
Check and adjust valve clearance if necessary (4 strokes).
Bearings
Check the wheel bearings, steering stem bearings, and CVT cover bearings (if equipped) for excess play and replace if necessary.
Every 5,000 Miles Or 2 Years
(In Addition To Above)
Coolant
Replace engine coolant (if so equipped).
Carbon
Check the exhaust, cylinder, and cylinder head of 2 strokes for carbon build up. Decarbonize if necessary.
CVT
Check the clutch, variator, rollers, and springs for wear, damage, or glazing. Repair or replace as needed.
Hoses
Inspect all hoses for cracks or tears and replace if necessary.
Brake Fluid
Replace the brake fluid.
Carburetor Cleaning
Clean the carburetor with carb cleaner or a chemical dip if much varnish is present. Make sure the jets are not clogged. Check the condition of any gaskets, seals, and diaphragms and replace as needed. If your scooter is stored with fuel in the system, this should be done at the beginning of every riding season.
