How reliable are the taotao scooters? Are they worth buying? I am looking at getting one within the next few days.

Wow. Is there really any good cheap chinese four stroke that's available in the US?
But, would that be due to bad rings or what? Would I have to get a better aftermarket piston?

thats a relative question. for someone who has tools and knows how to use them its not such a big deal. if not, a honda is better for you.
do you have the tools and knowhow to do a piston job? get a taotao if you want just be prepared to put a carb on it and possibly a ring job.

Also depends where you get the scoot. If you are lucky enough to have a good dealer around, most Chinese scoots can be good rides. That's a tough one though. So many places sell Chinese scoots and don't warranty or service them at all and have no interest in trying to get you parts or anything else. If you buy online, assume every problem is yours once it arrives and you accept it. Again, this is any Chinese scoot, not TaoTao specifically.

This is all good information. I do know how to use wrenches and I'm not afraid of a little work. I'm just new to four-strokes. All those dadgum tappets, valves, lifters, and junk. I love my two-strokes!

They definitely aren't as fun to ride or work on as the 2Ts IMO, but the valve settings and such aren't that hard to get used to. We've got how-tos and vids and such in the Tech Library detailing pretty much whatever you'd need to do.

There are higher end scooter that still are affordable and great quality kymco cpi Q-link most of this run in 1200-1700 rice range. I think all new scooter will be 4t for a while they are not allowing 2t in the country until one pass epa test i heard there is some older ones still floating around at dealer

I will say I have a taotao atm 50 and its not bad. I did have the speedometer cable break and the front brake line rubbed the front tire and blew out. Also you might need to adjust the carb depending on were you live. But minus that mine works great. I wanted something small that i can work on and customize. Even if you get one with a "bad motor" you can buy a new one for anywere from 299-499. that and with expres shipping i still only paid 815.00 for it...

I am now thinking that the extremely lean sealed carbs on these are causing heat issues which is cooking the low quality rings to death. If you buy new one put a new unsealed carb on it and richen the jetting up to #85 If you are looking at a used one do a compression test on it before you buy it. talk the seller down on the price based on them having sealed carbs that belong in the trash can.

I had one and it was a POS . The secret 63 cracked the piston the 2nd day and destroyed another a month later . I cussed out my dealer as I had over 30 under 100cc toys and never had a piston crack . It bounced like crazy and headlight was too dim at night .
I now have a Jonway Magnum with a2T 49cc engine and love it to death as its a blast to ride and can hit 50 mph but mostly 45 mph . The huge 130/60/13 tires ride and handle like a dream . Bumps and cracks on the road surface that made my TaoTao go eeek eeek are not noticeable as I ride over them with ease .
If you want a 49cc get a 2T and you will be glad you did . The 49cc 4T are loaded with problems

all of my problems with my TaoTao are cosmetic...lol..mechincally mine is pretty good minus the carb I had to replace the front brake line cuz they didn't fasten it to anything..lol...

I see several of you have talked about changing the carb on the tao tao. I'm buying one in a week or so but where can i find the right carb for the scooter? What other upgrades/parts should i change and where can i find them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

:welcome: to the forum I have had one for over a year, with no specific problems, but I took it all down on day 1 and checked every bolt and wire and the valve lash before doing more than cranking it up. then replaced the gas & vac lines with Tygon. then removed all the pollution recirculation tubes. removed the reed valve cage and blocked the recirc port to the stock intake and to the head. I'm real happy with mine, 1200 on the chinometer and it's been running super nice. I did change with carb with another, and the starter bendix as the original didn't want to engage well.
