I almost took out 4 of them today running across the road and 2 of them almost took ME out. Looks like hunting season has begun.
I'd rather ride in the middle of a convoy of 53 foot cab over rigs down a dark freeway at 65 miles an hour than go down a quiet country road where I know 10 squirrels will run across the damn road before I get to the end of it.
How is everyone doing out there on the critter suicides lately?

Haven't got to ride much. I did lock up the brakes in the truck to let a squirrel live. No one was behind me of course. I ran over a 4x4 at 40MPH a few nights ago. That was prob worse than any squirrel. People lose this crap on the side of the road and sometimes it's hard to see, especially when it happens to land around a corner.

We don't have squirrels here in Jamaica, but we do have dogs and goats that do find their way across the street that WILL bring a rider down. There have only been two moments of sheer terror since I started riding...one involved a dog crossing the road. Goats on the other hand are generally FAR more intelligent than dogs and if one is provided, they will actually use a pedestrian crossing! I shit you not...

never ran one over on the scoot, but i "fish" for them! sit on your porch with a light action fishin pole and tie a peanut to the string. DO NOT USE A HOOK PEOPLE! locate a squirell and make your cast. they will look so puzzled when you yank it out of their paws.

I've never hit a squirrel, but I did have a run in with a badger once on a dark road at 65mph. That hurt to say the least.

As they say in the safety course, take the bump. Never had to yet, I'll feel bad, but not as bad as sore body parts that last for months.

My thinking is if there is time, and the avoidance action don't endanger human life, then Ill avoid the suicidal animal, but I won't swerve or hit my brakes if it's going to put other motorist in any kind of danger.. I love watching squirrels, I have even set up little courses for them, they are a joy to watch, the last thing I want to do is harm or kill one if I don't have to.. But I can't put there lives over human and I won't.
Larger animals Deer, larger dogs worry me much more, and my options in avoiding them are much more limited, but again the same mind set. So long as my avoidance actions don't endanger human life..
I have seen people swerve over the center line and into on coming traffic risking a head on collision to avoid hitting a chipmunk, I won't do it. Sorry for the chipmunk...
