i notice on most scooters the stock exhaust header seems very small in diameter yet on performance exhausts they seem wider, if i just cut out the existing header & weld in a bigger diameter pipe will this improve performance or is there more to it?

Expansion chamber is the way to go for performance for sure. I suspect you wouldn't see anything from the larger header on a stock pipe. I have 2 stock style pipes. One is a modded muffler, more free-flowing, with a larger header. Other is bone stock, smaller header. The more "restrictive" one outperformed the open one. These are both 49cc stock exhausts, but even tested on the larger 90cc version of the engine. If the 90cc is good with the stocker, pretty sure a 49cc won't see anything from a bigger pipe. Oh, and even if your scoot came stock with one of those pipes that looks like an expansion chamber... it's not. The expansion chamber is actually stuffed with the same sort of things you'll find in the plain looking stock pipes.

Nope, not at all. Here's what's in there... 49ccscoot.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=exhausted&action=display&thread=2195Even if you cut it all out, there's a reason they call them "tuned pipes". This thing was designed to hold that crap and look like a performance exhaust. It was never designed to work like a real expansion chamber so all the dimensions would be way out of wack. Good looking scoot you've got though.

cost me new only £900 or $1440 OTR (on the road) a couple of months ago, its based on a boation falcon but much cheaper & half the price of an aprillia sr50 or speedfight......derestricted it hits 45mph & 70mpg when i upjetted & put a ZX on my old speedfight it certainly upped the power, i guess this is the way to go again if theres a catalytic convertor & baffle in the one i've got on at the moment

I *suspect* you will be calling Scrappy all manner of names after buying that pipe.
Personally, I *think* the best/easiest performance improvement you are going to make to a 2 cycle scooter is a "pipe". Once you have made this decision, follow through, and don't blow it, by buying some no-name junk. Pipes are not all created equal, unless you understand the science of the thing, and have targeted a specific requirement to fulfill, go and buy a "name brand" pipe.

The easiest decent pipes to find deals on tend to be Leo Vince. If you watch eBay, forum classifieds, and sometimes even craigslist, they pop up from time to time at some pretty good prices. Also, :welcome: to the forum jonnienumberfive.

Even on my Keeway F-act the stock exhaust was the "tuned pipe" . i knew it wouldnt be so i chopped it open and gutted it. it did look exactly like one in the link 90gtvert posted. and didnt do any real improvment. In my motocross days anyone that put on a no name pipe was shortly going to a name brand(pro-circuit or FMF). there is a reason the expensive name brands are still around, they work!(if they didnt they would be out of business)

i have a Leo Vince ZXR on my Keeway Matrix. previously i had a Leo Vince GP pipe on it also... just try and find one that fits a Zuma (01-11)... you will need to fabricate a new bracket for it, but the pipe will fit - Also depending on how the cables are setup - i had to move my oil injection cable and my ignition coil as they were both touching the exhaust.
I couldnt find a pipe that was designed for the Keeway Matrix without doing any of the above. maybe you will have better luck. As i said other then a little leg work it fit perfectly and works great.
