my buddy has a moped identical to mine and prolly most of those who have a newer taotao i think hes got about 4000 miles on it, and was recently riding and it had quit riding due to a loud noise which cause it to die, somewhere in his transmission case, he brought it over the other day we took it off and his starter clutch bendix had broken, well it was the smaller side right next to the large gear part, it like shattered open, im not sure what else might have broken or cause this to happen, it was a stock part, easy to replace, and cheap. Got the new one on, now cant get it to start, anyone have any idea as to what it might be... Has good compression, oil, gas, spark, brand new battery, everything looks good, nothing leaking or odd sounding when trying to start, sounds as usual, although it sounds like its not kicking over good enough to start, you know how you hear it when it almost starts, well there is none of that, we took the airfilter out and sprayed some starter fluid in, still nothing, checking the timing, and everything checked out fine, nothing looks bad, im almost stumped, i really didnt wanna tear down his whole engine if this might be an easy fix, any ideas? has new spark plug, ignition coil, fresh gas, new belt, new variator, and clutch also, but he said everything ran almost better than new before his bendix broke

so i guess no one has any ideas, i was reading some older post tryin to solve the problem, im gonna have to guess that the piston got damaged, think im just gonna have him order a new set, someone had told him not to fix it, and just sell it as is, and get a 150cc, as far as i know i would like to do the same, the guy said 150cc go about 55mph, and im like, my taotao 50cc goes 55, what would be the point, im not sure if some of you guys figured out what it actually is, it doesnt seem like the newer taotaos are 50cc, but 60-80cc, is that confirmed?

I've seen some that are touchy with the spacing of the bendix and CVT cover. If it had a gasket and that is gone or anything there changed try changing the torque on the cover bolts and see if it cranks over faster.

so you did a compression test on it? what was the reading? this will determine if the owner wants to continue with diagnosis..or sell maybe.

well i tried tightening the bolts but that didnt help, so i just decided to disassemble the engine, come to find out the cam chain guide was broke, prolly explains why his bendix broke because the timing jumped, kinda weird, think its time to go shopping :/

thank you well i havent yet purchased anything, he told me money is not an issue, as long as it doesnt run in over what its worth, i had told him he should buy some more efficient parts, what would you suggest i do, being that everything is already torn down, and after previous problems with the taotao, what do you think the best solution partswise i should go ahead and purchase New carb? and as for the chain guide, should we just go ahead and purchase a better engine, i seen some of the bigger bore engines, or should i just replace the guide and be done with it, thus having an extra engine for parts for my own taotao as a trade off doing the work for him what do ya think?
