hi, ive been having problems with my gilera ice speed,
first of all the speedo is stuck on zero and wont move but the petrol meter goes up and down.
the speed of the bike is fluctuating, it seems like something is restricting it. so i cleaned the carb, desrestricted the bike by taking out the two washers. the way it is fluctuating is that when i turn the throttle sort of half way it picks up speed, seems like thats as fast as it will go but when i begin to twist the throttle more it looses speed and begins to slow down. ive checked the belt and the rollers and everything seems to be fine.
does anyone know what these problems are cos ive posted on other forums and no one seems to know

When you cleaned the carb, did you ensure the main jet was not clogged in any way? I've had clogged or partially clogged main jets do exactly what you described with the throttle. Have you made any adjustments to the jetting just before this happened?
Could be a gauge or cable issue with the speedo. You can unscrew the cable from the speedo and see if it spins when you rotate the front tire. If it does, make sure the connection to the gauge cluster is secure. Beyong that it may be the gauge. If the cable doesn't spin, follow it and inspect it along the way.

Might just be a snapped cable on your speedo. Do the checks above, but sometimes the cable will still spin but if you pull the end it will come out as its snapped. My wifes scooter does this about once a year When you derestricted it, the exhaust? did you upjet?

no i havnt derestricted the exhaust yet, only took out he washers from the variator, i havent touched anything on the bike only took apart and cleaned, i recieved a second hand speedo today, connected it, its display is better but the speedo still is stuck at zero but when i press the brake levers in reads 1,3,4,5 then zero. do you think it could be that the sensor could be dirty cos the previous owner did not clean anything, where does the speedo cable go from the front to the.............? the carb was not that dirty to be honest but i still cleaned what i could. when i took it aprt for cleaning i removed the air filter and there was petrol in there and the filter was soaked? dunno why or what happened

also i forgot to mention that the previous owner pre mixes, 5litres of unleaded mixed with 200ml of 2 stroke oil, could this be causing problems? do i need to upjet or anything, also if i wanted to mod this bike e.g get it to go as fast as around 60mph top speed , what parts do i need exactly, i dont no anything about bikes as this is my first and the guy who sold it to me wasnt truthful about the problems it had.
if somebody could advise me on what parts to get exactly and which sites i would be very grateful.
thankyou

So this is a digital speedometer? Hitting the brakes and having the speedo respond makes me think you have some strange electrical issue, but the cable driven speedos should only be controlled by mechanical movement rather than electrical. :stumped: Cable should go from the speedo to the front wheel.
Clean the filter and let it air out and then see if it happens again.
200mL to 5L of fuel is a bit strong on the premix I think. Might wanna back that down to 150mL for 5L which is more like 32:1.

yes it is a digital speedo, the speed display increases when you press the f/b brake, when lights come on, turn throttle. could it just be a faulty speed sensor?

Those symptoms sound like some electrical issue in the cluster more than a cable / sensor issue to me.

The digital speedo's Piaggio make are a right pain, I went through 4 on my runner, £40 to replace too. Follow the wire back and check that the connector's not corroded or loose, otherwise it's new speedo drive, when the break they do tend to work intermittently.

Have heard of a few people having trouble tuning these, i would go for a dellorto ect. If yours is a 50cc 21mm is a big carb!

having same problem with bike, derestricted the variator, cleaned out carb. speedo started working. everything is ok except.......
it speeds up to half throttle and eventually top speed is 32mph with variator rings off, i dont think thats right. if i twist it any more (full throttle) it starts slowing down. then to get speed back up i have to keep it at half throttle. the main jet on the carb is 56 at the moment. when i took apart the carb it was really clean to be honest and the jets were clear.
please help, as really confused at the moment.
