I have seen many posts that say "Adjust the valve lash", and it works. I'm trying to wrap my head around why? Why does it work? What is happening? Are the valves becoming more "seated" so the gaps get tighter (and valves are staying open)? Or is it the opposite and the gaps get bigger (and valves are no longer opening far enough)?

Its your final valve timing adjustment. 'In four-stroke cycle engines and some two-stroke cycle engines, the valve timing is controlled by the camshaft. It can be varied by modifying the camshaft, or it can be varied during engine operation by the relatively new technology of variable valve timing. It is also affected by the adjustment of the valve mechanism, and particularly by the tappet clearance.'en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_timing

Wow! I was thinking in terms of clearance such as, "valve not opening far enough" and "valve staying open". I wasn't thinking at all in terms of "valve opening at the right time". So a larger gap is a valve that opens later.
Let's say you have an engine that was never adjusted since new and now has 1000 miles on it. When going to adjust valves, will they most likely be too tight or too loose?

in that case...and in my experience...they are always tight.

A valve with no clearance, (tight) is a valve that isn't closing all the way and that means compression loss, hard starting, stalling etc...

I have had that Chinese manual for a long time. It is somewhat helpful at times. The Haynes manual is out of stock. I wonder if it will come back in stock again?
