I posted a while back that my 1E40QMB 2 stroke Minarelli engine was making a loud raspy racket at high revs and it was suggested that it could be the starter clutch and it indeed sounds like it's coming from that area when I look down at speed. I am going to go out there and take it all apart right now and inspect. Should I put some grease on that thin needle bearing and/or the starter clutch "grabbers" themselves?

I grease the needle bearing and put an extremely light coat on the thrust washer in the back.

Thrust washer? I guess I'll know it when I see it. Thanks again Brent!

You will. Its just a big flat washer looking thing. Also, check the cover bearing and the kickstart stuff. Sometimes the will rub and make a metal to metal clicking, raspy sound.

Yah thanks Robert. I figured it had to be the big washer. Everything looks okay. I greased all the parts that needed it and the noise still persists. I think it's the reeds. They are the original ones with 4000 chinometers on them. Maybe it's the bearings. I really don't know. I know 4 strokes can go for 15-20 thousand miles. How many miles is a considered lot of miles on a stock 2 stroke engine/reeds? One other thing is that I went to re-grease the clutch and when I got the sleeve off it the o-ring was shot from heat I think. Not the end seal, the o-ring that wraps around the outside. Anyone got a link to a new one? I installed another clutch from that 1E40FM engine I have for now but I deffo want to get that other one fixed.

How about the vari slides? Its kinda hard to suggest anything without feeling like you have checked it already! Lol, i know you know what your doing is what im getting at...
Could be reeds i suppose? Honestly ive never worn a stock set out. Havent seen a set fail yet either.
So the cover bearing looks and feels good then? I think that you can get away with any o-ring there? Ive run with em from a harbor freight o-ring kit. Also ran without one altogether, a bunch! Could be you driveshaft rattling around in the inside of the bearing though i guess? Since the o-ring is gone, now you can hear it more.
Does it do it at idle or while moving, both?

You can probably take the old seal or the TD into a local parts store and get an o-ring that fits, or just get a kit from HF like Robert. They always come in handy for something.
Reeds do make noise and if it's them the noise should be changing with RPM. Doesn't mean they have to be bad cause you hear them. My VForce3 reeds in P90 are in great shape and loud at higher revs with my modded airbox. It sounds kinda like something is wrong with the engine, but it's fine.

I'm just going to get the o-ring kit and run the damn thing. It runs perfect. I replaced the gear oil while I was in there so I'm just going to ignore the noise. Thanks to both of you. Edit: I just made scootaholic!
