I've had it rolling through my head the past week to pick up some Sunoco 100 octane race fuel, and was wondering everyone's opinions on this. There's a few locals looking to split up the cost since it's at $12 a gallon presently.

Why? Unless your compression ratio is more than 9.0 to 1 or the manufacturer recommends it will not be much if any benefit. In a long stroke engine high octane can be a plus because it burns at a slower rate. It helps when kick starting my Royal Enfield, a long stroke single that fires every 720* of crankshaft rotation and its red line is 5,500 RPM. I cruise at 50 mph turning 2,900 rpm. A short stroke engine may not burn all of the fuel because the piston speed is so fast on a 150s RPMs at 45-50 mph. I know for a fact my pick up gets 2 MPGs higher with reg. grade gas at 65 MPH. I have had this truck since new and have put 147,00 miles on it so far so I know it. My wife's Honda 250 Rebel runs much better on reg. grade. Twin cylinder high rpm 5,500 RPMs at 50 MPH. Unless you have a highly modified engine IMO it will not show any benefit. Remember, a 2-stroke runs best right before it blows up. BTW back in the day (1960s) we had 103 at the pump.

and even at that do what some of the guys running cicrle track are doing retuning to run e85 nd belive it or not they are even picking up power and saveing money

Hi I see no reason to use racing fuel unless your engine is highly modified and needs that to run properly Use the octane that allows your engine to run properly, IE no detonation My scoot has an 11.5:1 compression on the engine, i use 93 or 94 octane with good results Take care and ride safely Yours Hank

Like I said it was just a thought rolling through my head. I run 93 constantly, and while I'm no genius when it comes to fuels, I used to run the Sunoco GT260 in my cager when I had it. Of course with a well built high compression engine, it did need it. Opinions are everywhere, while some don't mind e85, I flat out refuse it. Thanks for the input guys

I know it sounds like it should be better on high octane but unfortunately it is not. Our old jeep Cherokee recommended high octane when towing the max. 5,000 lbs. but it was explained to me it was to prevent knock or detonation under load which is what high octane is supposed to do not really give you more power.

Too high of oct on a engine not needing it and it will run worse than ever. And be hard to start. Lol, ask me how i know? Buy 110 now and then for my weedwhacker

I ran 110 in mine for awhile. It ran fine. It was $8 a gallon and they have it at the pumps here in SC.
